First let me tell you what I was told when I passed the instrument check ride. My instructor congratulated me and said, "you know, that wasn't really the check ride. That was just a check to allow you to take the REAL ride. The real check ride is when you go into the soup all by yourself. I'm not there. The examiner isn't there. It's just you and your instruments to find the way."
I'll never forget it and he was right. The first time I went IMC with no backup pilot I realised he was spot on and that was the true check ride. Ah, memories. Thank you for that...
