Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

Studied all week and all I could manage was a C-. Who wants to fly with a C- instrument pilot?

Maybe I should try something else.

It ain't rocket science. It'll all come together in the simulator and in the airplane. Just get out there and do it.

Don't let the 72 bum you out too bad. You passed. The examiner may dig a little in the areas you missed, but if you do well on the practical the written is a mute issue.

Re: Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

Hello Backcountry Pilots,
A pilot only needs to get a 70% on a written test, and an air traffic controller needs only to get a 70% too. 30% plus 30% incorrect equals 60% right, so does this mean that there is 60% of this information is just overkill? :D

I took my instrument checkride about a year and a half ago and used this to help prepare for the oral part of it. It really helped me a lot.

Re: Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

I used the dauntless software too to study for my IFR and COM writtens. It's even better than watching Martha King strip for correct answers... I took the IFR and COM tests back to back, and got a better score on the IFR test than the COM (maybe I had the jitters from the sheer excitement of sitting in front of that computer for so long...) I then aced the IFR checkride and managed to nearly fail the commercial checkride the next day. The funny thing is I haven't flown one lick of IFR since the checkride and have been flying single-engine 135 in Alaska ever since. It's a blast! IFR is overrated...

The rating gives your license to learn! The best thing to do is stay proficient by getting out there flying in simulated conditions and when your ready get some actual. Practice, Practice and more Practice!

It means you passed! Congrats! All you need is 70. Continue your flying now and get ready for your checkride. Even if you never fly IFR again after getting your ticket you'll still be a better and safer pilot for it. Keep on fllying.

Re: Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

Heck, if you only studied a week and were able to pass, good fer ya!

I finished up my instrument last month. I did score well on the written, but spent WAAAAY more time going through the Gleim book with all the questions in it. Frankly, I think it was mostly wasted effort. Did it make the oral easier? Probably, but there is a whole ''nuther book they throw at ya for the oral. I'd make sure I knew that. The actual flying part appears very far removed from the info presented in the knowledge exam, IMHO.

I know it is tough on the CO guys to get, given that IMC there usually means ice, but there is nothing like actual during your training. I was fortunate to get 4 hrs actual during my 40, all shooting approaches. I think it really paid off in developing a comfort level while in IMC. My first trip after my rating I was in the soup, no problemo other than a 7 yr old daughter in the back seat threatening to huck her lunch just outside the FAF......... [-o< and hand her a bag. Father of the year candidate, eh? [-X

Re: Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

Here is what I did way back in 1971 on my private written. It was at Ohio State University. I had a buddy who just took the ground school with me, while I also took the flying part too.

It was sort of a partnership. We sat next to each other and I would answer all the flying questions, while he would answer all the book questions. That worked ok for the course part, but when it came to the actual written, I was on my own.

I got a 30. It was the end of the year, so I got permission to go back and take the test the next day again. So I went back to my room and got my text book out. It had every other page attached to the next one out at the outside edge. I had to get a knife out and cut the pages loose. Obvious that I hadn’t looked at it all quarter.

So the next day I am back and take it again. This time I got an even 70. So a 30+70 = 100.
That’s what I’ve always said I got on my written, 100.

Studied all week!?! For my private, I read through all the material, took lessons and read through everything again, then read through it all once more before the test and still missed things. I dunno about you, but my brain is like a sponge: hard, dried, and impervious to absorbing new information.

Maybe look at it this way, you might not pass the first time with what's left, but you won't fail unless you give up. Like everyone said, it's a just license to keep learning and getting better anyway.

Re: Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

I took the 10 day IFR class at Sheble Aviation http://shebleaviation.com/ about 5 years ago. I recomend it. During a question answer session at the very last ( day before checkride), sombody said they felt kind of nervous cus they only got an 87 on the written. I just laughed out loud and said they wasted a lot of time studying. He asked what I got and I had to admit that I got a 71. Big laugh from everyone.

The bigest mistake that I made prior to going dawn to Sheble's was that a month or two before going, I should have turned of the GPS and done all my navigating with VORs. Practicing that is the bigest and most important thing to do.

It doesn't mean shit....
Let us know when you pass the Checkride. Then we'll hoist a cold one in your honor. Maybe more than one!
Oh yeah, when he hands you the Certificate, you better feel scared..... because he just made you legal to kill yourself.

Re: Passed My IFR written with a 72. What does that mean?

What's it mean?

It means you look at those codes that say what areas you missed, and study those even harder before your checkride - because it's a safe bet that the examiner's going to note where you were weak and start hammering away.

Hey, congrats on passing the written! Don't wait until a week before the checkride to study for the oral, and you'll do fine!

Your 72 means you're holding the same piece of paper that the other dummy's holding that says "95", except you didn't have to throw away countless weekends to get it!
