Patroller Doors

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

I'm sure that's addressed over at the Shortwing Piper site, Beagle... they have alot of info for Pacers there. I'd assume that clear or even light smoke would be preferable to green..but that's just my opinion.

beagle,
give eddie a call at Trimmer Aviation in willow, AK
(907) 495-5724
he holds an STC for the pilots side door on a pacer. all the ones i have seen around here are patroller style and they open vertically. usually called seaplane doors.
very cool though 8)

The reason you can look straight down in a Maule through the patroller doors without bankin is because the doors are curved inwards towards the bottom. Widest point is at the elbow 42.5in.

We fly with retract skis which is probably why the government installed them. The pilot can crain his neck, look through the bottom of the door to see the wheels, but mostly useful for back seaters. I'll look in the log to see if they were installed on approval or under a STC.

So, what did you find? I am quite curious about patroller doors for the 180/185

Yep, I brought this thread back from 2006 :P

Re: Patroller Doors

The Patroller doors were an option on the 185. So, they are on the approved equipment list, and require nothing but a mechanic's logbook entry to install.

Now, finding one is a different task. Bring cash. Lots of it.

Re: Patroller Doors

As previously mentioned, when you pull the seat up you can just see the left tire through the lower glass. When the right seat's empty and the seat's pulled back there's a good right view. Great for the back seaters . My plane is kind of an oddball with half a factory float kit (corrosion proofing and patroller doors but no float attach point doublers or high dorsal fin). My left door got bent by a gust of wind and we've been tweaking it for years and still can't get it to close flush at the bottom aft. I think the added stiffness of the window frame has something to do with it and I don't want to take the window apart again.
I don't really think the patroller doors are worth it. If you really want to spend some good money get the skylight kit from Cub Crafters. It's way more useful being able to see where you're turning. It's one of the best mods I ever did.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Patroller Doors

There is a fellow at Vacaville (KVCB) that has a 185 with the Patrol Doors.
When the front seats are in the flying position, you can't see out of them (if your in the front seats).
I've never had a human in the back of my 185 so I don't see much use for them. Don't tell my dogs they aren't human... Please
One of the nice things about a high wing airplane is the "Shade" :)
Do a clearing turn and spend the money on AvGas instead of the SkyLights.

BTW, the 185 in Vacaville is for sale at a reasonable price.... If you really want Patrol Doors :)

N92WM if there is interest...

Re: Patroller Doors

Finally found a 180 with patroller doors. They're not that rare on 185s...however, they seem to be impossible to find on 180s. So I ask again, how can this be done on a 180? Steal them off a 185 and try for a field approval?

Re: Patroller Doors

obviously its no wonder the Cessna guys don't like them look where the seat is when you're flying the plane..it covers most of the window... on the Maule I have a great view out of both windows cause the seat doesn't block them....

Re: Patroller Doors

I have installed them on my Stinson back in the 80s when I was doing a lot of ski flying in the winter. They help in a lot of ways . It opens the plane up for looking over the landing zones be for touching down.. Gives a lot of visibility on both sides of the plane. They are a excellent add on to any plane.
