Pheasant+Airstrip - South Dakota?

Anyone know a good strip near public access hunting in the Dakotas? I've got a (well) trained dog. We do alright in extreme eastern Colorado but I was hoping to find somewhere with a little higher population and decent access.

Thanks!

LOL! Yes, What Mike said! Not many places for nearby airport access in SD for pheasant. Now if you've got the big bucks, there are plenty of private strips that have hunts available. Bring lots of money!

Having said that, when my son was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, he and I hunted a DIY hunt on public land in the Gettysburg, SD area. This was via vehicle, driving around to all the lesser known areas. We did very good considering we hunted without a dog.

Funny side note....Son and I were eating at the restaurant one of the evenings and a group of 6 'Well healed' hunters asked us if we had any luck. We told them we had limited out, I then asked how they had done. They had only gotten 2 birds, they asked us what breed of dog we were using. I responded we didn't have a dog, They weren't very talkative after that.

I have hunted public road ditches in Gettysburg SD and done really well. I plan to be there early next month and hunt for a few days. There is an airport at Gettysburg SD too. I’m still trying to sort out if I can fly or not. Will need a vehicle when I get there.

I hunted a few WPA’s in ND last weekend and noticed all had well suited freshly cut bean fields, basically where I parked my truck.

I went to grad school at SDSU and there's lots of public hunting areas in east-central SD. Check out the GFP maps for specific locations: https://sdgfp.maps.arcgis.com/apps/weba ... 08e9fb1aaf

I don't know how many strips are adjacent to those public areas, but there are a number of municipal strips. I've hunted in Arlington (3A9) and next to Wilder Airport in De Smet (6E5). I've harvested upland and waterfowl all around there and with great success.

A lot of farmers are pretty good about allowing access if you knock on their door and ask nicely but in COVID times, that might not be such a great idea.

EDIT: There's some walk-in within walking distance of the Wilder Airport in De Smet.

There was more west of the WIA pictured here. Not a ton, but probably enough to keep you busy in addition to the other public lands nearby.

It takes a big man to cry. But it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
