The wife and I are headed east from the backcountry of Utah in two days. It will be a two-day trip on the way to Indiana. Looks like our midway point Saturday will be northern Missouri. Anyone have recommendations for airports that are kind to campers? Maybe somewhere with local attractions or interesting places to hike through the day?

Little out of your way perhaps, but worth it, is Arkansas.

One option is Gaston's, 3M0. Lodge, good food, cabins, all the amenities. Guided trout fishing on the White River.

A step "down" is Byrd's, 51AR. Beautiful spot, canoeing on the Mulberry river, comfortable campground. There's a store that sells sandwiches and essentials and a restaurant that's open some of the time.

Another step "down" is Trigger Gap, 17A. Grass strip on top of a hill. Campground, maybe some fire wood. I do not think this place has water and certainly none of the amenities of the prior two. But the RAF did us right with this one.

I hadn't considered southern Missouri. MO9, Kingsley's 4 miles west of Miller Missouri, has camping and a great restaurant. If one of the four Kingsley brothers are around, they will put you up in crop duster student apartment above the Hanger Kafe. They have a web site.
