Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Any word yet on the date yet Allen? Good to see you the other day. I'd really like to make this work if the dates work out for me.

Not yet Cory, but I think we'll have the date - weather permitting - figured out sometime tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Just noticed that Upper Loon is right on the edge of a TFR.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Yeah, I saw that too. We're probably looking at the 2nd week of September for the trip, so I'm hoping things will have calmed down by then. I'm praying for lots of very targeted, heavy rain!

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Well, things are conspiring against us and it looks like we'll have to push the trip until the 3rd or 4th week of September. Hopefully the fires won't have burned down the entire state by then.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Sorry. Been out of it for a few days. Bummer to hear that. Still, let me know as soon as you do and I might be able to swing it. I'm seeing a lot more blue sky on the webcams than the last few weeks. Now I just have to decide if I am still heading north next week.

I'm bouncing around the area the last weekend of the month (29th) if you are interested. I might take some folks fishing at Schafer for a day.

Hey Allen. I just checked my schedule. I have the last two weekends free this month.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

We got some rain in SE Idaho which has helped with the smoke. My wife just went to tour on the Mustang and Halstead fires so I'm hoping for a good report from her.

The kayak race in Ogden on the 22nd was canceled so I'm going to try for either that weekend or the next.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Chamberlain Meadows is kind of a sleeper fishing location. Easy strip and nice camping at the west end and good fishing in 3 different creeks. Flossie Creek is found at the west end of the runway and you can fish it upstream for several miles---since the '70s we have had good luck with dangling a fly under the cutbanks in the larger pools and have seen 9" natives there. West Fork creek is reached by going to the north end of the cross runway and taking the wagon road/trail over to Stonebreaker Ranch (nice place to look around) and then go north from the ranch (there is a trail) into the West Fork drainage and fish the cutbanks down to Chamberlain Creek. Finally, Chamberlain Creek has lots of small Rainbows now (used to be some good size ones before the Dolly Varden multiplied) and Dolly Varden(catch and release). Another good location is up trail to the upper Chamberlain Creek. Good luck wherever you go.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

I had not thought about Chamberlain, that's a good suggestion. I'll let you guys know when we nail down a definite date - I'd love to hang out with some fellow BCP'ers!

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Chamberlain would be great. Always wanted to camp there. Looks like the last weekend is the only one I will have a plane for.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

GSP, if you end up not having a passanger but want one I might be interested in riding with you and splitting fuel. Been thinking about a 182 but have never even looked inside one.

Chamberlain is nice and smoke shouldn't be too bad there. Would be fun if we all end up going at the same time.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Hey Whee,

I'd be up for that. Let 's see what Allen comes up with for dates. If it is a weekend, I'll probably bring my son along, but that wouldn't rule out picking you up too as long you don't mind. Are you still in Boise? This would be a lot of fun!

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

Looks like I can't make the 29th; my wife bought tickets to the USU homecoming game. Still hope for the 22nd but I need a weekend to finish some house stuff before the cold weather.

I'm in Idaho Falls now. I don't want t get in the way of father son time but if your good with it then I'm good with it.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

I think with as cold as it is getting at night, Adam won't be coming along for an overnight. Either way, you are welcome. Let's see what happens. I'm not sure if I will be able to get a plane for the 22nd though.

Missed where you said you could only get a plane for the 29th. Guess we'll see when Allen decides to go and see what happens.

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

I'm still hoping to go either of the next two weekends, but there is a possibility it won't be until the first weekend in October. Trying to get my schedule and my friends schedule to mesh is turning out to be a full time job. As soon as I know I'll post the dates we're going. We are definitely going, we just don't know when yet!

Re: Planning a Fishing Trip to Idaho

You might want to call McCall or Salmon Air and get a smoke report before heading out into the Idaho backcountry. New fires keep popping up around here. A couple of days ago two fires started just north of New Meadows, now merged into one that is 3,700 acres. IFR conditions here in Council this morning, now about 2 mile visibility, presumably much worse in New Meadows, and when the wind is right there will be problems for McCall as well.

The local airplane mechanic tried flying out to Chamberlain Basin a few days ago, and he said there was so much smoke there (from the fire at Dixie, which is now 25,000 acres) that he couldn't see to land. He hit Reed Ranch on the way back, as it was fairly clear there.

So, be prepared to find another strip if your destination is unavailable, and bring enough provisions to last a few days if the wind shifts and smoke prevents your departure.
