Planning a lazy cross country

In 2000 I bought a plane in Ohio, flew it to North Carolina then home to Montague California. Then several years later I bought one in Providence, RI and flew it to Montague. Both times it was a lot of fun. The second trip was really a hoot cus I announced the trip several weeks before I did it and several folks on this forum offered me bed and a meal at there place. That is how John Grahm and we became friends. Still owe him breakfast.

Well in the summer of 2017 I want to do a trip from Montague, CA to up state New York, then south a ways (mayabe Florida) then back home. Like to do as many states a practical. We would like to camp some and motel some. I know there has to be some really good airports that have camping on the airport or motels close by.

Any suggestions of places would be appreciated. Also it there are "have to spots" I need to know about them. I hate it when you talk about a past trip and somebody says " I cannot believe you did not stop there"

If you're around Huntsville, AL I've got a spare room and we're only a 15 minute walk from downtown. We've got some great breweries here if you're into that.

Re: Planning a lazy cross country

Okay, initially head northeast to West Yellowstone, camp overnight there, next AM crawl out of the sack, jump in the plane and head through the geyser basins northward to KBZN. Stay with us, and we can tour Yellowstone via car, or you can had east next day. Lots of stuff around here to see.

Or, head south and revisit Ballast Point..... :D

Re: Planning a lazy cross country

Yes, there is a pilots campground on the field in West Yellowstone. It's right off the north east corner of the parking ramp in the pine trees. There's even bikes to use, although when I was there last year the bikes needed some help, but the wheels were still round.

Re: Planning a lazy cross country

Where are you headed in "upstate NY"? Anywhere north of NYC out 350 miles is upstate NY!

Suggestions in no particular order: Flight over Niagara Falls (see published procedure), National Warplane Museum in Geneseso (D52), Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome near Kingston, NY, Lake Placid in the Adirondacks Winter Olympic related sites, lots of wineries in the Finger Lakes region, low level flights along the shore of Lake Ontario or the St Lawrence River Thousand Islands region.

If headed up to the Adirondacks the only area to be sure to avoid is the Restricted bombing/strafing range at Fort Drum. If in contact with Wheeler-Sack controllers they will remind you. If it's hot you may get to see some fast movers too. Army helicopter traffic is common all around up there too.

There are lots and lots of private grass strips all over the state and drops ins are usually welcome. They are somewhat fewer and farther apart in the Adirondacks or Catskills, but they can be found.

I know tou said upstate, but the NYC flight down the Hudson River corridor out around the Statue of Liberty and Verizano Narrows Bridge is unkown to most and feared by many, but it is an easy stricty "announce positions" see and avoid flight that is breathtaking and a "hard to believe I'm doing this" experience. The procedure is online. It's best shared with another pilot the first time.

Re: Planning a lazy cross country

Niagara Falls and east a bit. Then down to DC and just found out I need special procedures for that. Then south for a bit or a lot not sure yet. I would like to see a couple of guys off my submarine.
