Polson Fly In

Is anybody going to the Polson, MT fly in this weekend? I was heard about it on the radio (750 KHz) this afternoon.

Here is a link for more info:

I was told they had over a hundred aircraft there last year. The forecast is looking good...

Harvest is in full swing on the farm, so I won't be there (harvest is the only time of the year we make money). If anybody drops in be sure to give us a report.

I went, probably about 30 or so planes there. Stayed a while and headed off to Meadow Creek and Schafer. Thunderstorm a couple days ago started at least 50 fires, most of them small. Some valleys, like the South Fork, have smoke so thick it's IFR from a few hundred feet down.

I went also, and ended up eating breakfast with a guy who flies a turbocharged Columbia gofast, he didn't have it there since he bases out of nearby Ronan, and it seemed pointless to him to make that short of flight. Me, I thought nothing of making the near 400 mile flight, longer really the way I went, at 80+ mph. He mentioned with the climb rate and speed he has, more power pretty much solves all problems, just up and over, like up to 20K! I mentioned I do a lot of power off dead stick ridge soaring, and pretty much fly as low as possible at all times, and then had to explain what I meant, ("you shut the engine OFF")? He has a built in oxygen system, I carry a full size folding mountain bike. He feels anything less then 3500' of pavement is possibly a bit tight, I pointed out the cow shit on the wing bottom from a hillside landing to take a leak, he has air conditioning.

It was a fun conversation for both of us, and we each decided I should get a Columbia and he should get a S7-S. The main reason I flew there was the excuse to fly the entire coastline of Flathead Lake at 45 mph with the window open, I have a few pics I'll post later.

Total of 65 planes and 300 breakfasts. Light on the airplane side vs previous years but not bad.

CourierGuy, I saw you come in as I was on my way out. I had to fly up to Kalispell to watch my son's very first football game, entertaining. Was that you parked next to me up in Kalispell? It was a nice day to be out and hope to catch up with you some other time.
