poly-tak

I need a very small quantity (probably about one teaspoon) of poly-tak to repair some seam tape that is starting to pull up. Does anybody know where I can purchase some of this stuff (1 pint or less) in the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington area?

I know I can get it on line, just trying to support the locals if I can.

Thanks.

I left all mine back in Colorado when I moved to Yakima, sorry. Though, if you have no luck, I might be able to find some at work...but they'll probably want to sell it. I don't know of any company that sells in that small of a quantity.

Re: poly-tak

IF, it is chemically feasible, you might try to use the old timey BUTERATE dope. You could buy one of those small bottles from a hobby shop. Trim

Re: poly-tak

You might try Columbia Airmotive in Troutdale. Otherwise, I know the guys at Twin Oaks or Overall Aircraft at SPB do fabric work. I would give you some, but I sold my supplies with the plane.

I'm in the Portland, OR area. I figured that I'd call Columbia Airmotive on Monday to see what they have. I know it is sold in pints and larger quantities, just want to get as little as I can.

Re: poly-tak

I have some poly-tak in my hangar, if you want to get together I would be happy to give you some. I usually buy my poly fiber supplies from Spencer Aircraft at KPLU, and fly up and get it. I would rather spend 4 times as much to fly up and get my stuff and have lunch, than pay a stupid haz-mat fee to have it shipped. JMO
PM me is you want a phone #.

Re: poly-tak

FYI. There are no hazmat fees to ship poly tak. Haven't been for years now. Just can't ship it "air".

Re: poly-tak

Good to know, I got reducer and some other stuff as well, so who knows what triggered the fee. Thanks for the info, see you at JC. :)

Re: poly-tak

Congress (believe it or not) got rid of Hazmat fees a few years ago on all of the fabric covering supplies, dope, paint, glue, reducer, etc. If anyone is still getting charged those fees, then somebody is making a little extra cash!

Looking forward to JC.

Re: poly-tak

If it is a small little ripple, you can apply some MEK to the area (slowly, with a small natural sponge) to soften it up and work/push the edge back into the dope with a small roller wheel...you might not need to buy a bunch of dope. It has worked for me, and seems to last just fine as long as there is ample dope in the area to soften up. In areas directly over the longerons, etc., where the fabric does not hold as much, this doesn't work as well do to lack of extra dope. Going at it from the inside works even better, especially for ringworm, but takes more time and gets stinky fast if you have to do it from inside the fuselage.

If you really need the dope, you can generally quickly find butyrate dopes and sometimes poly-tak cement in hobby stores or online for several dollars for a few ounces.

I did not have any luck with one type of finish, where the MEK wrinkled the top coat badly and needed finishing with sandpaper to take the top coat off completely before applying cement to fix the spot and finishing with a new color top coat.
