Poor Man's Windsock

Image
Inexpensive windsock from amazon, some 2 inch and 1 inch schedule 40 PVC pipe, and a scrap piece of Lexan. In this case the Lexan is 0.10 (3/32) inch thick. You can go thicker but not thiner. The 1 inch PVC on top is just long enough so that the large end of the windsock cant reach it and slip over. All PVC pipe pieces are dry fit, no glue.
The windsock is the 30 inch one from amazon

The lexan swings between two couplers.

Image
The 2 inch PVC is reduced (bushed down) to connect the 1inch.

Image
The hole in the lexan is made with a hole saw or a large unit bit and a small dremel sanding drum or a round file and more time.
The short piece of 1" PVC is 1/16 inch longer than the distance between the stop inside the couplers plus the thickness of the lexan, so it can swing freely.

The 1/4 inch hole to attach the windsock clip I drilled with a unit bit.

Image
Metal T post driven in the ground a couple inches shorter than the 2 inch PVC and then the 2 inch PVC section is slipped over the post. In this case the 2 inch PVC is 66 inches.

Image
The 1 inch pvc is 52 inches between the 2 inch PVC and the bottom coupler

Re: Poor Man's Windsock

Nice

But after living in the cold, I’m not a fan of PVC in cold weather or under lots of UV

Thanks. Maybe schedule 80 PVC would last longer.

Re: Poor Man's Windsock

It's not going to last very long.

What are you saving by trying to use PVC instead of steel pipe or even treated wood? 20 or 30 bucks? Contact the RAF and I think they'll give you a wind sock. Make your own frame.

A rotating windsock frame made out of two hoops is ridiculously easy to make with the most basic of welding gear or riveting with basic hand tools.

Sew your own sock out of orange fabric with a basic needle and thread.

Add a solar powered light and you're good till 2 in the morning!
