Portable Electric Fence Pireps Request

In the market for a portable, lightweight, electric fence for C-180 & PA-18.

Considering the Electro Bear Guard LWC, www.electrobearguard.com. It's 4 lbs including batteries and 40X40.

Requesting pireps on this or other brands please. Mission, I guide on different ranches where we land in the pasture and need protection from livestock, black bear etc. Only needs to fit one aircraft at a time. Solar/battery combo would be nice, but battery only is fine. Average time aircraft will be parked is 5 days, and will be checked on at least every other day.

Thanks

That looks good, nice to see an Alaskan entrepreneurship.

We have a UDAP we've used for years. Keeps them away no worries.

Thanks GB, hadn't seen the UDAP brand yet. Better price, and 5 weeks of charge smokes the 3 days on electro bear guards UL.

Which model do you have? Looks like either the ultralight or the outfitter model would do the job, waiting for a call back from the company for more details.

Re: Portable Electric Fence Pireps Request

I use the Patriot brand fencers as that is what is sold locally, good luck with them all, Biggest thing to make them work is good ground rod!! the deeper the better, also pour a little H20 around the ground rod, if it is real dry add a little salt to the water! Get you some fiberglass posts, ( has 3 or 4 places for tape, and use the 1/2 or 3/4" polytape for your wire, make sure you put a few twists in it so it is visible and will shimmy in the breeze.
I use it for stock with up to a mile of polytape!
Also used the little battery powered one to teach a bear to stay out of the yard!!

I don't think there was an option when we bought this one, but it is probably very similar to the ultralight.

I met the guy a long time ago at the SHOT Show. He started selling these after a griz peeled his lid on a hunting trip. I think the fence was before the spray that he sells but I could be wrong.

Re: Portable Electric Fence Pireps Request

As M6RV6 says, grounding it typically the biggest challenge, particularly in dry country. Sometimes, as he noted, some water at the ground stake works, but if the ground is really dry, it may not, in fact, it probably won't.

Here's some advice from one of the manufacturers: http://www.bestbearfence.com/bear/how-b ... ciples.htm

Several good fence setups out there, it's not rocket science. That said, I just noted that Udap can't even get their numbering system for their fence parts to match the letter system they have in their images...... #-o . I hope they build better fences than web sites...... [-X

Re: Portable Electric Fence Pireps Request

Friend of mine used to use them while doing volunteer work for the Sierra National Forrest.

Seems he said there is at least one animal that is missing a reverse gear.
Tried to search for such a critter but did not find one.
I did find a very educational link showing how bears react, and surprisingly learn, some humorously.

Re: Portable Electric Fence Pireps Request

OH, we learned a LOT of bears that electric fences are bad Ju Ju.

Before we started using fences around our camps, we had bears in camp frequently.....more nights than not. Fences fixed that and everyone slept better.

Had a very aggressive acting male black bear regularly visiting one of our camps. I went out there to see what we should do....well armed. We watched as he approached the camp fence, marched back and forth for a while, then stopped and gradually extended his nose toward the fence. I thought "Oh boy, he'll get the message now. Then he stuck his tongue out, and wrapped it around that wire. Sounded like the worlds biggest bug zapper.

He left. We could hear him bawling for some time as he got further away.

Never came back.

Re: Portable Electric Fence Pireps Request

If there's a potential 'ground' issue with the fence lay a bare uncoated wire on the ground under the hot wire(s) and electrically bond it at both ends to the conventional grounding rod. The same type of wire as the hot one can be used, or get some thin light stranded copper. Having it close to the contact point will shorten the path of the electrical circuit when the critter hits the hot one.

You can make your own by just buying the stuff off the shelf from you're local farm and ranch supply store. Look for fence chargers that operate on 2 D-cells. Something like the Speedrite SG50 model. Wire and stakes are easy once you find the charger. The twine with small wire strands braided into the twine works well.

Really appreciate the responses! Still researching at this point, got a month to decide before really need it.

Appreciate the grounding info as well, that is a big concern in some of our country that is just a pile of lava rocks. Luckily, the main ranches that require the fence have good ground.
