Portland OR local knowledge

I hoping to take my son to a Blazer game at the Moda Center this coming Monday and weather permitting I would like to fly to add to the adventure and take the long way home the next day. Maybe hit Pacific City for lunch and then make a big loop checking out some other strips on the way home. At this point the weather forcast is not looking promising at which point I’ll just drive but it’s also continually changing (and for the better) so fingers crossed.

I was wondering what airport would be the best to overnight for the game. I was thinking Troutdale or Hilsboro but is there a better option?

Also, any cool, lesser known, off the grid type spots we should land to check out on the way home?

Feel free to PM if you don’t want your super secret spot known to the world  .

Thanks,

CW

Pearson Airport (KVUO) in Vancouver, WA is probably a little closer and the traffic is likely more favorable driving southbound the evening of the game. I don't fly there often but they like you to contact Portland tower prior to landing there. Approach from the west over Vancouver lake for landing on either 26 or 8 keeps you under the Class C airspace. Go Blazers!

Re: Portland OR local knowledge

I've landed at Hillsboro, Troutdale, and Pearson as a regular visitor and for business.

I usually don't rent a car. Public transportation is good, the rentals aren't cheap, and Uber or Lyft usually works well.

If you land at Hillsboro you can take the Max blue line train to the Rose Quarter station, and then walk to Moda. It's most of an hour train ride and maybe a five minute walk. Hillsboro sits a little higher in elevation than the other two, and is ringed by higher terrain. On a day with low ceilings it makes a difference. There isn't much going on that far out in terms of entertainment or interesting places to eat.

It's hard to get downtown from Troutdale on public transit. Either a long bus and/or train ride, or a long cab ride. The winter wind out of the Gorge can also howl on an ugly day, as it sits right where the Gorge narrows.

My first choice would be to land at Pearson and take an Uber or public transit downtown. Generally Portland Approach has me arrive low, and creep around to the Northwest of Pearson. Occasionally if PDX traffic is light I get cleared through PDX airspace north of the river to depart eastbound. Watch your altitude, as the airspace ceiling over Pearson is 1100. Read the Pearson special instructions below.

We usually stay in either the Pearl District or NW 23rd. Lots of great restaurants. Salt and Straw has ridiculous ice cream.

On the way back, the WAAAM museum on the airport in Hood River is incredible, and keeps getting bigger. Perhaps 200 antique airplanes and autos.

I fly down there for brunch every so often. KVUO + Uber is quick and easy. Have fun!

Thanks for all the information all! I’m not sure why I’ve never considered Pearson but it sounds like the way to go! I’ve flown into PDX a few times but it my experience it’s not very GA friendly. Thanks for the detailed response jcadwell, That was helpful on a number of fronts!

Sorry I’ll miss you Rob. We need to connect again one of these days!

Has anybody hit any of the grass strips on the west side recently? Are they drying out?

Now, erveryone in the region turn on your fans and point them upward to blow any bad weather out!

We have had a lot of east wind for the last week. Every strip has its own issues. If it is in a low spot, no drainage, no go. If the strip was built with wet ops in mind probably fine. I have not been to any grass strips lately. Looks like the rain is coming back. You will probably have to drive. Maybe use the Columbia River Gorge route. Be safe.

Re: Portland OR local knowledge

I’m renewing IA in Portland today (23-MAR)...then heading to Honolulu.

PORTLAND FLIGHT STANDARDS DISTRICT OFFICE
Aviation Maintenance Seminar and IA Renewal
When: Saturday, March 23, 2019
Where: Portland Community College, Rock Creek Campus
17705 NW Springville Rd. Portland, Oregon Seminar: 8:00 to 5:00p
Please join us at the Portland FSDO Aviation Maintenance Seminar. This seminar is not just for Inspection Authorization holders. It is designed with topics and discussion relevant to any aviation maintenance professional and other interested persons. We have found this event to be very helpful in opening up communication between industry and the FAA. Presentation topics are currently being developed and finalized and if you have any suggestions, please use the contact information below.
To use this seminar to meet the requirements for IA renewal for the second year period, you must attend all 8 hours of the seminar. You will be provided with a record of attendance to use during the seminar for IA renewal.
If you are unable to attend all day, we will be providing opportunities to take an oral test to satisfy the renewal requirements for the second year period.
If you cannot attend the whole 8 hours, but have your renewal requirements already met, we will have inspectors available throughout the day to renew authorizations. Please feel free to come by for renewal.
We will also be visiting Eugene, Medford, Redmond and Hermiston in the month of March, 2019, and will have an evening meeting where inspectors will be available to renew your IA, provided you meet the renewal requirements. Additional information to follow.
