Pray For More Snow - Greg Swingle Ski Video

I am jealous of those NE folks. We need another foot in Ohio soon.

Good to see you guys are successfully battling the wintertime blues!

It's fun going back to familiar places you hit a lot in the summer, but now on the skis it's a whole new ball game. Ski flying is for the intellectual pilot, #-o as it really makes you think a lot more, like float flying I guess.

Excellent video and thanks for sharing.

At what point is the snow too deep for large tires?

Oh, you'll know...... That is one of the best winter flying questions, as it has no easy or correct answer.
It all depends on the type of snow, some snow could be a foot deep and OK to land, other snow less then 6" could really get your attention. A hard crust is another real gamer changer.

Just about everyday if not working I make the 3 mile drive up to the ski area, and I go from 5640' at my place to when I get off the chairlift at 8,600'. Then in the course of the next 2 or 3 hours I make 8 or 10 runs, and as mentioned often go ski flying later so I am paying attention to the conditions in more ways then one. It is endlessly fascinating, and very instructive for a wintertime pilot (skis or not) to experience the incredible variety of snow conditions all in one area. along with a few thousand feet altitude gain or loss. Some snow may be wind packed, some may be wind drifted (two different things) some may be mushy, and around a ridgeline ice glazed. Right about the time you start getting a handle on things, it warms up or cools down a little and everything changes!

This is in the mountains, in and around ridges, flatter ground would be more uniform in conditions I suppose. The wind direction and velocity changes I notice in these elevation changes is a whole 'nother subject, as a pilot I really benefit from my time spent on the mountain, it is real interesting in more ways then one.

Even riding my bicycle, I can relate to that question. The other day when it was about 10 degrees I was going though some 6 to 8 inch snow and today when it is around 30* I had to walk pushing the bike.

Re: Pray For More Snow - Greg Swingle Ski Video

I just got back from snowboarding and the snow today was what we call "mashed potatoes". OK up higher, real good actually, just heavy powder, down lower it was so sticky and slow it about jerked me out of my boots. That stuff would be a bitch to take off in! One takeoff I had last year in just that kind of snow, Henry's Lake Id. and it took about 1500 to 2000' for me to get off, it was like velcro on the ski bottoms! BIG warming spell here :x

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: Pray For More Snow - Greg Swingle Ski Video

Thanks for the kind words.

I get a steady shot every now and then. It's heartbreaking when you do something cool but there's a bump in the middle of the proof...or you lose an entire memory chip like I did on this video shoot.
To answer how deep is too deep for bush wheels, Simko summed it up good. You never know. Four inches could possibly get wedged under your tire in the right conditions and ruin your whole day. Somebody I know pretty well nailed a two foot iceberg once. That did the job too.

It's just a concept that will probably not happen. I have other ideas but was hoping to find funding and partners and turn it up a notch.

Great concept. Add this guy in middle-o-nowhere Wyoming to your list of backers, Greg.
