Do it! The Ti folks will take your old gear in partial trade, and John from Flight Resource is on this site and I've found him to be really nice to deal with. \:D/

Is the Titanium Gear even available? If so, where can you buy a set?

I've been in discussions recently with this guy. Word is 3-month lead time, and list price of $13500, or $12000 if you have a good set of gear legs to trade.

But of course! What self respecting OCD lunatic would not weigh his buggy before a project like this.

It was really important to get a benchmark prior to starting all this madness. Shortly after flying it back from CA I got it up on the scales. She was actually 81lbs heavier than the 30 year paper WB (no surprise.) With 600x6s on her she was 1772lbs with just useable fuel and full oil.

I flew it a bit with 8.5x10s and the baby bush and in that config she was 2303 (incl 84gal fuel and full oil.) She has 79 gal of usable which gave an empty weight of 1829lbs.

So the real question will be what will the magic number be as there was a lot of shedding that went on. 20-30lbs in battery, 30lbs in avionics, 55lbs of interior, 35lbs in back seats, 10-25lbs of paint, etc etc etc... I guess in the end it really wont matter a hill of beans, but If I can keep her under 1700lbs with bush tires I will be tickled.

I am 1734lbs...betting you get very close. If I stripped my paint I would be under 1700 barely. Forgetting what tires your running?? Breaking that 1700 mark is very hard. I hope you get it!

Really great work your doing!

For a 170, that's a good question. Below is the response I got about it. I'd be interested to get the take of anyone who has more experience with the ins and outs of bureaucratic red tape.
-DP
p.s. It's been mentioned here, but supposedly a 170 titanium tail spring is in the works. Whether leaf of stinger, I don't know.
p.p.s. Apologies to Greg for the thread drift...

the 170 is not on the model list for the ti gear STC. however, below are the manufacturers comments on the scenario based on research and past experience.

The FAA says okay with the deviation. If You have a 170 you buy two STC's. The STC to put 180 gear on the 170 and the other STC to Put the TI gear on. The deviation is for make and model. FAA handbook says its good for a field approval providing both STC's are purchased. Lead time on gear is 3mos List. $13500 with out a core (185 gear cores)

That looks like it could be considered a minor change to the STC and not need field to be approved to me but that's up to whatever individual is signing it. Same goes for the FAA if the installer thought a field approval was needed: It would depend on the individual FAA inspector. But it looks like a strong case could be made for either field approval or even install it per the two STC's.

Re: Project: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

But, there has been an AD on the Ti Gear, right? What's the outcome of that? The FAA was saying that certain installations of the Ti gear are now not approved, including some on the 185. I never heard the outcome of that, or whether the manufacturer is back in the good graces of the FAA.

And, getting a field approval in many FAA districts is impossible these days.

You guys need to talk to Tom at Landing Gear Works and he can tell you the story... but all that was cleared up. Word on the street is that a nasty divorce spurred one party to try to wreck another parties business by spinning half truths. Net net is that the Ti Gear are approved and being sold with the STC. All thats left is ponying up the grub.

Re: Project: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Bigrenna,

How did you mount the rear mic and phone jacks?? On my '58, the only place I can figure is somehow attaching them to the cover over the flap/aileron covers... :?: Looks like there are some airframe differences between your year and mine so might not work the same anyways.

Also, can you show some pics of your "forward kick panel area"?? Trying to get an idea how to work that with the vents and all. Noticed you had some scat tubing incorporated, not sure if we have the same heat duct on the firewall or not.

Thanks a bunch, and great work BTW!! Since I started tearing mine down, I've really started to appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into your bird!!!

Re: Project: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Bart, I'm in the same spot with my 57' 180. I addressed this in my project thread and sure enough Bigrenna's 180 is different than ours. I'm looking into solutions, but please let me know if you have any ideas (via PM or my project thread, I don't want to muck up this thread).

Indeed there are a several differences between the early and mid-models. I don't think pics of the 66 would be that helpful for your application, but I'd be glad to shoot whatever you need. PM me with specifics.

Re: Project: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Some more progress on the Sportsman today...

First step was to get a coat of zinc chromate on the skin where the blocks will be affixed. Next, test fit each block using the specific station templates and tape into place. Once fitment is ensured, mark each location, scuff, apply adhesive, and float each block into their final resting place. Register each block again with the template, then tape into place and wait for drying.

The holes in the leading edge were from the old OWL cuff that was removed. These will be buried under the new cuff as it is much larger. In looking at the second to last pic, you can see just how much more leading edge is added with the Sportsman over the stock wing. Crazy...

So far so good!

Re: Project: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Next step on the Sportsman install was to box out and WX proof the section between the nose blocks around the cabin air vents. This is done by cutting the provided foam to fit between the blocks on the left and right side of each vent, and sticking them into place with the provided RTV. Once installed, you cover the foam with RTV to make the cavity water tight.

Once this is done, mark the center of each vent as well as the stall reed on the top of the wing (far enough aft as not to get covered by the new cuff.)

Nice! I met Mike in McCall last summer to talk about getting a net for my 170. I would still like to get one. Looking forward to see how yours looks once you get it installed.
