Prop choices on 180 HP Super Cub

I was talking to a friend recently that is looking at a Super Cub that has an O-360-C4P engine. It has all the light weight items (starter/Alt) so the plane is relatively light for an O-360. EW is 1227 LBS.

The discussion turned to available Props for this plane. Being a certified plane I only know of a couple different props that are legal on this engine installed on a Super Cub. A Sensenich and the McCauley, which is what is on the plane (82" climb). Not knowing much about these engines I tried looking up to see if anything else was available but have come up with nothing.

There is a guy at the local airport that has a very similarly built SC and he has a Hartzell Trail Blazer CS prop on his plane. I have no idea if the O-360-C4P is a hollow crank engine that allows the use of a CS prop. I got on Lyc's site to try and figure it out, needless to say, I didn't, hence my question. Is there anyone that knows of any other props that can be used on this engine, legally of course. Otherwise the new owner could be an outlaw and buy a Catto. ;)

Prop choices on 180 HP Super Cub

The sensnich 80” fixed pitch is a great prop, they are covering them with Fiberglas and a stainless leading edge.

Thanks Tom! That is the other option I was thinking about. I would like to see/hear if anyone has performance data between the two props.

I might fly over today to get a look at the plane but I think the incoming rain may delay that trip.

Re: Prop choices on 180 HP Super Cub

Thanks again Tom!! I flew over and looked at this plane yesterday. It is an absolutely gorgeous plane. Basically new from top to bottom. It only has 118TT. The plane is IFR and has just about every Cub Crafters STC available. New fuselage, new wings, 48 gallons fuel, upper and lower baggage (extended) Garmin 430, etc. My main concern with the plane is the engine. TT on it is from being built in 2002. That's 16 years with very little run time. The owner found out he has Parkinson's and hasn't flown it in 10 years. Well, he mentioned that he would have a couple of different friends fly him around in it. The logs show a couple hours in the last year.

I did find out that the O-360-C4P is not a hollow crank so no CS prop.

Craig Catto wants to get into the certified market. It doesn't help you now but you might want to take part in his survey https://www.cattoprops.com/certified-propeller-survey/

He's making some fine props for Cubcrafters kit and light sport customers.

It’s easy enough to pull a couple cylinders and any owner that knows there airplane has been sitting for years shouldn’t have an issue with that.
