Re: Protecting the Horizontal Stabilizer

MAF has those mud flaps on their planes in Nampa. I think they look really ugly and would never degrade my plane with them...I'd rather take the dings 8)

Re: Protecting the Horizontal Stabilizer

I've always thought these mud flaps look cool and might even be functional. I don't know anything about them except I ran across this picture on the internet. I believe it came from some postings of a Brian Wynkoop fly-in in Ohio a couple of years ago. Might be able to use the Google for more info.

KG-
I've seen what's in your picture elsewhere, also on 170's. Once&futur is talking about actual mud flaps that are typically made up of steel angle and truck mud-flap material. They install aft of each main axle. One piece of flap is horizontal and is shaped to closely follow the profile of the tire, with 1/2" clearance or so. The other piece of flap is suspended vertically a few inches aft of the tire, from the same piece of angle that holds the 1st piece. Most sets that I've seen looked homemade, but like once&futr says, you see them the most on air taxis, so somebody presumably has paperwork for 'em.

That's the one. Ugly as all getout....almost as ugly as a banged up, pockmarked horizontal stabilizer and wing underside.

I should have been more specific in my post. Oh yeah, I'm aware of the ugly ones. I was just trying to point out some that Whee might like a little better.

Also, denalipilot, I've been meaning to say hello. Those guys near you with the orange tails on their Navajos are good friends of mine. I'll be in for a visit this summer. If you will be in the area then, I'll look you up.

KG- Sorry- with your Anchorage location I should have figured that you're familiar with the "Hillbilly, Podunk, Redneck" version! =D> =D>

(I think those other wheel fairings are left over from an early episode of Pimp My 170.)

Hope to meet you this summer.
