PSA: Govt Aviation Weather App (IPhone)

Well it looks like the government finally did something right. Tax dollars at work!

I was planning my first solo cross-country last week and was looking for a helpful app for my phone. I found the NOAA/NWS free app at the App Store. I'm not sure if it's only for the iPhone or if they have an android app also. I've been using it quite a bit. It has all the up-to-date current weather forecasting maps and models that the National Weather Service uses for aviation. I really like it I think you guys will too. Plus it's free.

I took screenshots from my iPhone and then posted them via tapatalk. All done from my phone.

Screenshots are taken by pressing and holding the button on the bottom front and the top right button (the on/off button) at the same time. You will hear the shutter click noise and then whatever is on your screen at the time will be saved in your photo album.

Ur welcome!

I use them a lot. The weather service was prevented from producing weather products directly to the public back in the early 2000's...by the commercial weather products firms (weather.com, et al, for reasons of unfair competition). They still publish some really great products if you know where to look.

My favorite:
The experimental ADDS prog charts:

They have really been spot-on for years here in the rockies, and not too shabby in the northwest, for years now, and have been a great learning tool for me.

Another great place I use is Weather Underground. Av weather (METAR's) on the page, plus you can dial in any of the real time wind/precip/temp data from private weather stations near the airport via a map...very helpful when weather gets blustery with frontal passages.

One of my favorites apps is authored by one our users here, it's called Deep Weather. It serves up the NWS forecaster discussion based on your location.

The forecast discussions are, in my opinion, the best way to get a good mental picture of what's going on. For observations and numbers-centric forecast, use ADDS or whatever, but for understanding the dynamics of the weather that's happening and going to happen, try Deep Weather.

The government didn't write that app. They spent hundreds of millions of dollars to put weather monitoring stations, radar and satellites into place to give us good weather information and then a company called Appventive (you can see it on your screen shot) has spent a couple days putting together a wrapper that presents it on your phone either with advertising or, for 99 cents, they will remove the ads.

I just downloaded the deep weather app. I opened it and was greeted with a simple menu in languages I can easily understand. The aviation forecasting system sucks in my opinion. I mean in all the "official" lingo. I feel like I need a decoder ring. I love studying the weather, but why make it more difficult to read than it already is?

Nice work on that one Oregon 180!
