Re: Pulled the Trigger...New SUV for the Wolf (GSP) Family

Congratulations! I know you'll love the bird. Mine already had the Horton STOL kit installed, I don't know if I really need the VG's for the wing but I think I could use the extra authority for the elevator. (I don't think there are any kits to put them only on the tail though). There is no doubt that my nicest landings happen with a load - it just is much easier to use finesse when you're not having to hold constant back pressure in the first place. (on my plane, with just the front seats occupied, the nose up trim is maxed with plenty of additional elevator applied by "armstrong")! Or using 30 degrees of flaps will make forward CG more manageable too.

Cory

Somehow my first post got bumped so I try again.....

Nice looking plane and Congrats!!!! I sure you are very excited. My plane is a 64 206 with the 520 so real close to yours. We love it and have had many family outings in it. I do have the bigger tires all the way around which is nice for off field landings. I do not have the VG's......someday maybe. We took the 2 back seats out ......have lots of room for 4 people and all the camping gear you would care to take along.

Hope you have many family trips....enjoy them while you can ....not long and they are off on their own. My son did come back for a 4 day camping trip this summer......it was still a blast.

good Luck and have fun =D>

You can also try using full nose down trim. It requires more armstrong in the flare, but the tab will then work to raise the nose when you pull back on the yoke. Heavy stuff way in the back works fine too. Have fun!

Re: Pulled the Trigger...New SUV for the Wolf (GSP) Family

Thanks guys!

Pat, it is a '63.

The VG kit by Micro Aerodynamics consists of 156 VGs: 80 on the wing, 40 on the vertical stab, and 36 on the bottom of the horizontal stab.

Oh yeah, and the extended baggage area is on the list too since we will only have one of the back seats out!

CAVU-

I've tried the full nose down trick - guess I need to eat more Wheaties!! :D (maybe the 12 ounce curl isn't enough)

The good part is my best landings happen when the whole family is with me - makes them think I'm the best pilot around!!

Conversely, some of the worst landings have been just me, myself and I to experience!!!

I started taken taildragger lessons and i think the nose heavy 206 help me with the taildragger, but I know landing a taildragger certainly help landing the 206. With the winter survival stuff and general supply kit way in the back I suppose I have 100lbs back there which helps as well. 1500-1600 rpms seems to be my sweet spot but don't hesitate to adjust throttle. My downwind and the start of final are a bit higher than most 25-30 degree flaps can always go to 40 and slow it down more. kind of like coming in over 50' obstacal all the time and always a just a little bit of the stall horn before touch down. Each person does it a bit different for me I had to get the feel for it and still practice pratice practice. The local guys use to come out and watch all the time....but as the years past not so much, more to just give me a hard time .......I'm glad I can provide them a bit of entertainment

Awesome news Cory - its truly the family truckster!

Not to hijack the thread, but I see you were using the new AOPA FlyQ app. How did you like it?

Re: Pulled the Trigger...New SUV for the Wolf (GSP) Family

Thanks!

It was ok. I have limited experience using Pilot and Foreflight. It has some features that I like, like the split screen and the synthetic vision (which I actually forgot to play with much. Of course, it needs an AHRS to really work well.) It did shut down on my twice and I had to restart it. But overall, not bad. I'm planning on using all of them (FlyQ, WingX, Pilot, and Foreflight) for their trial periods and then select one. Hopefully I'll be able to get a good xc in with each one.

I will say this. Love the iPad and the moving map was a live saver being in a new aircraft in unfamiliar airspace.

Cory:

The new family picture now looks complete. Congratulations and I know you will continue to smile as you look back on this decision.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Re: Pulled the Trigger...New SUV for the Wolf (GSP) Family

Forget Flightprep. I bought and used it before Foreflight went big. I now use Foreflight and won't ever go back. It is Windows based, so nothing like going into an unfamiliar airport, excited to use the Geo referenced airport diagram and get the message,"Windows has encountered a fatal flaw, shutting down". Bummer, I had to do it the old fashioned way, looked out the window. Plus, the ipad is much more capable than the small tablet used with Flight Prep and there are a lot less wires in the cabin. My 2 cents.

Re: Pulled the Trigger...New SUV for the Wolf (GSP) Family

Just a little update:

The last few months have been busy. Oil temp gauge and gasket replaced which stopped a small annoying oil leak. Then I contacted Gami and, after swapping 3 nozzles, my Gami spread dropped from .6 to .2. Very happy with that. Se runs happy and cool at 22" MP, 2200 RPM, 120-125mph IAS and burning 10.4 gph and 60-70 LOP. Right where I was told to expect.

While the seat material was in great condition, some of the stitching had come undone. I had the guy that does the interiors of our club aircraft look at them and he said, "no problem". The first two are back and look like how I imagine they looked brand new. He also covered our center console armrest in a faux leather that looks great.

The current project in the hopper is converting it to the 600/800 wheel setup. I just finished gathering the parts up yesterday and will be pulling the strut this weekend to send to a shop to swap the forks. I'm very excited about this one. I'm hoping to have it done before Caveman. I'll put some pics up when it is done.

Lots of fun and learning a lot!

Oh yeah, and I went with Foreflight. Liked some things of the others but overall liked it best...plus the 20% discount from my company!

Re: Pulled the Trigger...New SUV for the Wolf (GSP) Family

Hey everyone,

Just an update on the project. Friday, after a 2.5 week wait to get the fork back, it arrived and at last I had all the parts to make the conversion happen! I met up with my mechanic yesterday morning and after a very busy day, it is done!! I'm really excited about it and can't wait until I get the chance to try it out. The sad thing is that I had to be on a plane only a few hours after finishing it and wasn't able to fly it before heading back to work. So, I'm really looking forward to Friday/Saturday later this week! I'm just glad to have it done in time for Caveman.

600x6 up front, 800x6 on the mains. Next...VGs, but I had better give the checkbook a little time to recuperate!
