Question on interior plastic rules???

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Question on interior plastic rules???

So I have some pretty old panels that are brittle in my airplane, especially the ones at my feet. So I was trying to fix them up with some fiberglass... Well it didn't seem to work that great. Maybe if I use some plastic fixer upper. But really, it's still brittle and sucks. Image

I found out recently that someone trying to make a more spatial interior and he will be selling it for $3000 YIKES! [-X . And the one side panel will cost $300 (it has an arm pinch point and is falling apart!) and the two foot panels would be another $200. Not a big deal, but the panels take up space that I wouldn't mind having, to make things feel more spatial! So here is the guys product.... (NOT MY AIRPLANE!)

So I went and found some plastic ($15), just to give some things a try. I would of course put some arm rests on, and make it look prettier!

But what are the rules on the plastic interior??? I know it needs to be fire-resistant, get ABS fire resistant no problem. But what about the interior???? Can I make some panels myself & I would paint them to match the other interior. Please give input! Thanks!

Re: Question on interior plastic rules???

Technically, ANYthing that goes into the interior has to have a burn certificate. It's TECHNICALLY not good enough for the manufacturer to say it's burn resistant, or even fire proof....needs the certificate.

That said, who's gonna check that burn cert?

Bryan -

I used Kydex to make a rear baggage compartment cover. It was designed for aircraft interiors. It meets FAR 25.853a i & ii (Vertical Burn) and FAR 25.853d (Smoke and Heat Release). I believe that these are the burn certificates that we need. It is available in different colors and different thicknesses. Check Interstate Plastics in Sacramento.

Several threads on supercub.org about custom kydex interior panels. Some nice work being done. Seems to be easy to work with.
