Great video! Is that you I've been seeing doing autorotations over 4L at Kalaeloa (white Robinson)? Just packed the 140 into the huge hangar with the rest of the GA aircraft to ride out the storm. Hope you found a safe place to seek shelter and another safe place to store the R44!

Was thinking about you and the Cessna 140. Good that the old John Rodgers Navy hangar is still there! I personally don’t think Hurricane Lane is going to strike us with anything over 50KTS. But, that’s enough to damage light aircraft. Glad you are safe!! I am not too concerned about all the warnings... even leaving my boat in water. But, the R44 is in a T-hangar at PHNL (I’m not the owner).

I have been practicing autorotations at Kalaeloa for (2) weeks straight. Getting ready for a check ride. After check ride will head to the mainland for more flying.

I don’t understand why it’s a category (4) Buoy Data shows 5002 only 25kts sustained?

The R44 is a fresh OH, 4.7hr on the Hobbs out of the box from RHC. I was first pilot!

Re: R44 II South Oahu, Garmin VIRB test Doors-Off

Glad to hear you got a safe place to stay. The large hangar is amazing, and I was able to push the 140 under the wing of the oil spraying DC-6. My only concerns now are shattered glass falling and tearing up my wing fabric (hence hiding under the DC-6) and the large doors either coming loose or more broken glass causing aircraft inside the hangar to move and damage each other. Not much else I can do now except wait and see! As for the hurricane itself, I got a chance to talk with some of the aircrew of the hurricane hunter C-130's and they were saying it isnt looking too good, but could swing south. My ship at Pearl Harbor has tripled up mooring lines and has extra watch standers ready to respond in the event of damage or coming loose from the pier.

Re: R44 II South Oahu, Garmin VIRB test Doors-Off

Thank you for pictures of Kalaeloa! I used to fly out of the USCG Air Station many years ago, across the field. Was a contract SAR pilot, check airman and safety inspector under the Auxiliary. Great mess hall over there! Many memories good and bad searching for people.

You will probably see me again in the 44 after Lane is no longer an issue.

Note in the future: we are going to inflate an expired life raft off the boat and practice getting in and out etc... let me know if you want to join us. Good training and an excuse to cool off!

Re: R44 II South Oahu, Garmin VIRB test Doors-Off

Sounds good to me! Depends on how the storm pans out. Still currently showing as a CAT4, so who knows what other responsibilities I may have if the storm hits hard between now and when I PCS in 40 days. Youre welcome to come for a flight in the 140 if you want as well any time before it goes in the container on Sep. 14th.

Re: R44 II South Oahu, Garmin VIRB test Doors-Off

Big Friday and Hurricane Lane:

My previous evaluation of the south buoys has been updated. 51002 is reporting gusts to 82kts, sustained 64kts. Waves 27 FEET = 40’ surf ! Surfing at the Ala Wai will be amazing, glad I have reserved parking!

Hurricane Lane is for real.

The following image is from the GARMIN BlueWater app on the iPAD. Great for seaplanes and surface vessels.

Just finished buttoning up the last of the equipment at Kalaeloa. The coast guard helos are in the hangar with the rest of us. And now we wait.....

I know the feeling hurry up and wait! I believe we will all be OK. But, better be over prepared than underprepared.

Driving to the marina I noticed trades are definitely increasing and rain has started. Note the Roll Clouds...

Picture is the 800 Pier, Ala Wai Harbour about 2 hours ago. The surf is only 4-5 feet increasing...
Image

My boat is usually on the 800 Pier but, was relocated temporarily back near the Harbour Pub, “G” Dock which is way more protected in high wind and waves from the tall Hotels:

Rain has started and the sky has darkened, photo taken at noon:

The GARMIN VIRB is so completely superior to GoPro. But, the free editing software needs work. Adobe Premiere still is the industry standard when it comes to editing video. But, the accelerometer, GPS and air data is easy with the VIRB editing software to embed in the video.

Next I’m taking my VIRB surfing and fishing...ha ha! VIRB is my buddy. Oh yeah and rock climbing at Smith Rock and Yosemite!

Cool video, love flying the 44!

Why VIRB over GoPro?

Sorry to be terse...just purchase the VIRB. You will not regret it.

Sweet! I will have to get one. My brother does a lot of paragliding and filming, I think he prefers VIRB over GoPro now also.

Synthetic video stabilization is perfect on the VIRB. No more wobbly flight scenes!

My GoPro has seen hard service for (6) years. It will not die. Except the GoPro in Australia that I put the wrong case on and went in the water at Harvey Bay, QLD. It started buzzing so I pulled the SD and got the video however.

If you a have moment, this video shows the unstable GoPro nuances. But, like I mentioned the GoPro has endured and has place in history like no other camera.
