Don't mean to threadjack but it's related to flying into Canada. Maybe Northernguy can expound after his brandy and cigar.

I let my medical lapse and am flying under the light sport category. My plane is light sport compliant. I read on the COPA site that I have to have a medical to fly in to Canada. Is there any way a light sport guy can fly a light sport plane into Canada?

I am not sure if this would work or not. Type in class 4 medical form on your browser and it should come up with the Transport Canada Class 4 medical form. Fill it out , get your personal doctor to sign it and send it to Transport Canada. You may get a class 4 medical out of it and that would likely allow you to fly in Canada.
I fly with a Recreation Pilot Permit and a class 4 medical.
If you are successful it might open the doors to a lot of sport pilots.
As they say" the doors are always closed till you kick them open and let the sunshine in"
I was always told I could not fly in the USA with a class 4 medical, until I phoned the FAA and asked them directly. They said " WE DICTATE WHO CAN AND CANNOT FLY IN THE USA " come down and enjoy our hospitality.
The same goes for our owner maintenance program. No Not Never is changing and permit are being allowed.

Hey Ken,
My dad is wanting to get a class 4 medical because he had a cancer scare last year and usually only Flys by himself or with one passenger. He also had a blood pressure thing. . He's still passing his private license medical but is thinking that it would be better to change over now before his old age shows more issues with his health. How difficult was it getting your class 4 and changing your pilots license to a recreational license?

What I would do in his case is drop down to a Rec. pilot with his existing class 3 medical, should be straight forward. Then when his class 3 medical is coming due just down load the form for class four , have the family doctor sign it and send it in. Do not wait until he has been denied a class 3, because the train will stop right there.
I know a number of used to be pilots that let their ego stop them from dropping down to a Recreational license. They now stand on the ground and watch the planes fly overhead.
Very sad.

Thank you Ken. I'll pass on that tidbit to my dad. . How's your airplane flying this year? I haven't seen you in cycw for a few months now. . (You probably are wondering who the heck I am. . ) I worked with Rick on your 172 last year. I left Rick's shop about 4 months ago. .

I agree with Northern Guy. US pilots crossing the boarder...Just get the FCC "lifetime" restricted radio operators permit. Then get the FCC "10 year" station license.
No...CBSA will not ask you for it up North, and US CBP won't either. Its when something goes wrong that you WILL be asked for it.
Remember the old preflight "A.R.R.O.W." that we all learned when we were student pilots?
One of those "R's" was for Radio station license. I believe it was dropped in the Summer of 1985, but is still an ICAO when entering/crossing the boarder just like N-guy says.
Nice job Northern Guy!
