Was thinking the same. How could you miss the airport in LNAV/VNAV?

Re: Radio Transcript of Dreamlifter Landed at Wrong Airport

Ya gotta wonder if there wasn't some sort of malfunction beyond pilot error, cuz 8 miles off on an RNAV approach is insane. At 8 miles out they should have been at like 3,500', at least 2,400' AGL. Even with the lack of glide slope, the fact they screw up that badly is beyond me! And ya also gotta wonder about ATC?! Either way =D> =D> #-o

That was painful to listen to. It was almost like the poor pilot was impaired, the flight didn't originate in Colorado by any chance? #-o It was like a Cheech and Chong routine, "Dave's not here". He was probably just very rattled but wow what poor communication skills/radio work. One cool controller however. I'd never even joke about that but the guy is so screwed already...... poor bastard.

OK-before anyone puts their uninformed foot in their mouth....... As always, there's more to the story than the Monday morning quarterbacks know. It was the perfect storm which involved loss of nav data, a departing Lear Jet that turned the runway lights up full at the same time the tower cleared them to land as well as several other contributing factors. The stars and the moon all lined up at the same time. Could happen to any of us. [-X Thats all I'm going to say. You can read the official report when it comes out if you want more details.

The loss of nav data. Are you telling me that plane has only 1 nav? No redundant system? WOW I feel like Mr Big shot now, I have a Garmin 430W, 250XL and a tablet. Take away 2 and I can still go to my intended airport.

I remember from IFR training if any part of your nav system goes tango uniform thou shall report it to ATC.

Cheers

Pilot In Command. This is 100% on the guys in the front seats. Perfect storm or not. And yep, we are all human. But I'd add that a big part of the perfect storm rests at the feet of the FAA, an organization that is still stuck back in transistor radio days. (For you youngins that's how us old farts listened to music on AM radio - I know, you have not idea what I'm talking about) :-)

Anyway, it's seems monumentally stupid to not allow commercial pilots to enable ownship in Foreflight (and the other apps). There has to be thousands, perhaps ten of thousands of flights made every day by non-commercial pilots using apps like Foreflight as primary navigation without once having the app lead the pilot astray.

Had these guys at least been using Foreflight for charts WITH ownship enabled they would have realized there was a problem, and certainly have known where they were.

Why is the FAA requiring things being permanently mounted and wired. Take ADSB for instance. Why can't I have a portable ADSB out device that I can transfer between my planes. This device would interface with Foreflight so I could assign the aircraft Information to it.

Here's hoping they wake up.

Re: Radio Transcript of Dreamlifter Landed at Wrong Airport

Actually, several airlines are now using IPads in the cockpit, with some form of nav data and geo referenced approach plates. The FAA approved same some time back.

You still have to look at them however.

I have never been lost in an airplane. The runway has been in the wrong place a time or two though.
