Radios? Baofeng? 2 meter + airband yasso?

While not directly aviation-related, survival and basic wilderness skills, sometimes called "bush craft" are an important part of flying the remote backcountry.

Radios? Baofeng? 2 meter + airband yasso?

Not sure if we did this

But any tips on a good handheld radio?

Looking for something that can ideally do double duty as a aviation radio for my occasional CFI stuff and also work for a woods radio

I'm not sure there's a combo avband and 2m handheld on the market.

I do 2m with a Baofeng and use a Icom A6 for flying.

Baofeng and good radio are mutually exclusive terms. I had to deal with Baofeng quite a bit at work until I retired, because broke volunteer fire departments kept buying them. They are not FCC approved for anything except amateur use, despite the fact that they can be programmed for commercial freqs. Any spec you can look up for drops, waterproof, physical abuse etc., they do not meet any of them. Drop it on the sidewalk, throw it away. Get caught in a rainstorm, throw it away. As for a 2-meter/airband radio in one, the only radio I know of is the Vertex Spirit. It's discontinued, they show up on E-bay, near unanimous opinion is they do not do either band very well. Best option is to buy 2 separate radios, 1 for 2-meter and a second 1 for airband.

Based on the FCCs clusterfuck with radar altimeters and the long planned 5G cellular, their blessings mean a little less than they used too lol

Are you finding the 2M works better for person to person in the woods and such?

I was also thinking what if one just used fingers with two air bands while camping

TBH I don't use them in the woods much. Mostly truckin', paragliding, across the lake, etc. There's always the stress of getting hassled by a ham, of which I am one but my wife and kids are not. The kids have walkies that do GPRS band, and the Baofeng can do those freqs.

They're not the best quality but after several years mine are still functioning without issue.

For dense foliage, a longer wavelength might be better, like CB, which is 11m if I remember correctly.
