Rans guys/ builders- Why is this plane still on the market?

Sometimes the most fun way to get into the backcountry, Part 103 Ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft have their own considerations.

Rans guys/ builders- Why is this plane still on the market?

http://boise.craigslist.org/for/4718320526.html I've been looking for something that I could goof off with cheaper than my 182. I've been horrified at some of the garbage I've looked at to include an Osprey I found here near home that will probably never fly or float due to the craftsmanship. This coyote, which I would personally never fly with a 2 stroke, seems like a steal even if it were firewall aft. I'm trying to wrap my head around the red flags of home built stuff that might save me some time running around looking. I'm really interested in an amphib, the osprey would have been cool if it hadn't been constructed like a pinata. Folding wings are appealing too.

It's kind of hard to go wrong on these airframes. They are dead simple. Don't know why the price is so low he should be able to get more than that. I suggest you call Rans and ask them what you should look for. Ed at Rans is a good guy and if he doesn't have time to talk then Randy himself will get on the phone. Randy is real personable and helpful.

Thanks for the tips. I passed on a weedhopper last time due to some harsh critics on here. Months later the eventual buyer crashed it as predicted. The experimental category is hard to follow. There's some really cool things available only to builders and then there's some scary crap, like guys welding chromoly frames together with old buzz boxes, then hiding it under fabric. Witnessed a wrecked Kitfox due to duck shit spatter weld of the rudder petals this Summer.

The tips and assistance is what makes this so great. We're all like family here, including the infighting and smack talk... but everyone will circle the wagons to sincerely help anyone else. It's really a cool, strange, bizarre deal... we put the "fun" in "dysfunctional" :)

As far as I know, the Kitfox / Avid airframes were all welded at the factory? Anyone here know different... ?

There will surely be more than one BCP member in the Boise area who can take a look at the RANS and tell you why it is still for sale, or advise you to snap it up right away.

EZ, I liked your economics lesson on my last experimental whim. Donating that Weedhopper to Courierguys beer can ministry would have been better than what the crippled buyer did with it. What would I do with a 2 stroke engine if I bought the Rans? I looked at homebuilt with a Corvair engine today. As if that wasn't scary enough, it hasn't been started for 10 years, and nobody knows what the status of the car was when it was removed. If I'm ever diagnosed with a terminal illness, I think it would be fun to hire myself out as a test pilot for some of the scary projects these old pensioners have cobbled together, and try to set a world record for number of times I could cheat death before the Grim Reaper caught me.
