"Rations for each occupant..." what to carry?

Lots of great information on survival gear in several different threads. Rations are mentioned in the forum 17 times with a majority, interestingly, in reference to Caveman Ranch and the Doolittle raid on Tokyo. People must eat well there.

So what do you carry to meet the emergency rations requirement of AS 02.35.110. I'm refering to item (1)(A), "rations for each occupant sufficient to sustain life for one week"? I used to carry a box of MREs in the back. I'm not sure that's enough now that we went to a zone defense on three kids, and boxes of MREs aren't as accessible as they used to be. Your thoughts on what to carry to fill that requirement?

Seems like that is just for Alaska. For flying in my neck of the woods/desert I carry 4 cans of chef boyardee beef ravioli, and then freeze dried meals and a jet boil. But I'd be hard pressed to feed everyone for a week. Around the southwest the more important question is how much water are you carrying?

Yeah, sorry. This is the Alaska state regulation regarding survival equipment.

Re: "Rations for each occupant..." what to carry?

Brett,

gbflyers list pretty well sums up a good survival gear box... but...

When I am flying around up north I generally carry a box of sailor boys, because they stay good pretty much forever, and several Mountain Homes, because they weigh next to nothing and allow for 'real food', plus there are very few places *I frequent* up north that don't have water close by . Up there I always carry an MSR water purifier, and realize for the purpose of emergencies I could easily get by without it, but I always have it for camping purposes, so it compliments the Mountain Homes well...

As a side note, Canada's version of this reg used to (and probably still does) call out a specific calorie number... When flying my cub north and back I found this number hard to reach without packing quite a bit. Consequently, at someone elses suggestion I started packing a quart of peanut butter when north bound in the cub... It too stays forever, takes up little room and packs the caloric punch to satisfy the Canucks...

Take care, Rob

Actually, food is about the last thing you REALLY need in an emergency.

BUT, there is survival and there is SURVIVAL. The first, lower case survival if you will, I consider to be bait. A little food and some decent camping gear makes a decision to sit out weather a lot easier to make. The ability to set up camp most anywhere and have some grub and a dry tent and sleeping bag has probably saved my life more than once.

Rob's choices of Mountain House freeze dried dinners is a good one. You can cook them, or if you don't have a stove, you can just let them hydrate and hose em down cold.

Clif and Luna bars were a favorite of my field crews in AK, and having eaten a few of them, I see why....not bad. Energy bars are good.

There are some products on the market that provide HUGE amounts of protein and carbs in a brick of "food" for survival rations. I tried eating some of that stuff once......as we used to say in the service: "It ain't Mom's cooking, but it'll make a turd." Not a big turd in the case of that stuff.

Again, review the Helen Klaben and Ralph Flores survival story on the web....those two survived for a LONG time (February to April) in the Yukon in winter with NO food.

MRE's are great for this purpose, in my opinion. Simple, keep for a long time, and more or less edible. And, that's all you really need.

Caned cat food. Fancy feast. Good people food seems to disappear. If I had only water for 2 weeks my weight would be just right.
