RC plane to the edge of space and back

I've seen this before, but I can't recall if it was here or somewhere else. If it wasn't here, please enjoy:

Guy rigs up a First Person Video (FPV) link on his RC place and sends it into space via balloon, then pilots it home after re-entry. :)

Amazing! I wonder what his total investment was: maybe less than $1,000 with gas? I'm guessing he recovered the camera and plane since we saw better image quality than described about the video signal.

Definitely. I think he had a GoPro or the like onboard, as he commented his video feed was down for minutes at a time while at max altitude.

That was cool.....however, you have to be aware that you are launching something that can cause significant damage to an aircraft. Several years ago I almost had a midair with a balloon that had an instrument package suspended below. I was at 33000 feet and .85 Mach. It definitely would have left a mark.

I had the same thoughts myself. That guy appeared to have descended right through IMC.

Re: RC plane to the edge of space and back

Great video, I hope he lands it back at his feet on the next attempt!

I was really surprised that he was able to have a clear video down link from 10,000 meters with 1.2 ghz. From my understanding it should be much less than that? Better range due to rising straight up?

As far as possible collisions with aircraft, I agree with Mr. Ed. What are the regulations for launching something like this in the US as far as the FAA goes?
