Hello Backcountry Pilots,

Sorry I have not been pursuing the re-opening of the Riggins Airport lately. Been busy with my own place. I usually get down to Riggins in early spring to give 135 helicopter checks to Salmon River Helicopters. That also coincides with whitewater kayaking on the nearby Little Salmon River. What a coincidence?

Anyway I plan on meeting with the land owner at that time. Right now the major barrier to landing is the barbwire fence bisecting the runway. Most of the fence is down so, I don’t think it is used for cattle anymore.

In low water it is an easy paddle or even swim across the Salmon River in the summer to Riggins. At highwater however a guy could end up 70 miles downstream in Lewiston. I have a cheap one-man raft that I can carry in my Maule.

If I get any new information I’ll let you folks know. Hopefully it will come to the point where I’ll need some help pulling sagebrush on the re-opened runway.

I know it's been a year, but has there been any interest in re-opening this again?

I always enjoyed visiting this little town, but it truly is one of those places that's just a pain to get to with an airplane.

Appears it could be 2000 ft with a dog leg. Have sat in park across river looking at it many times? would a pontoon ferry be cheaper then a bridge?

Hello Backcountry Pilots,
It doesn't look good for getting the old Riggins Airport re-opened. Several months ago I spoke with the owners of the property. They live in Asotin, Washington. Anyway they are ranchers and are not interested in re-opening the airstrip. That said, the property is for sale. I think that they are inerested in selling a large partial, rather than just the flat near the Salmon River.
Maybe the RAF or some BCP member would be interested in purchasing the property. I can put you in touch with the owners if someone is truely interested.

Unfortunately, what is said here in the 1956 Rudder Flutter, predicted the outcome of today.

Question Please: How do you have access to a 1956 copy of "Rudder Flutter"? Amazing.

It really makes for interesting reading.

Seems the City of Riggins, well knows it's need for an airport, a page from their last Economic Development Plan in 2010. And their ideal would be having one? Seems the City should be one approaching rancher/s to buy property for a strip..........

Re: Re-open Riggins, Idaho Airstrip?

Had to bring this thread back from the dead. I have no idea if where this thread left off is the latest update, or if people have since opened up the airstrip, but I saw this post on Zillow. Just need 15-20 of my closest friends (or maybe a handful of really wealthy friends) to go in with me.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/Rigg ... 9926_zpid/

This ad does spark my dreaming mentality of finding a few friends to buy a bunch of land in the backcountry and build an airstrip. It's my goal to do that anyway, but the prices of land in beautiful areas almost necessitate sharing with some friends.
