Recording Audio with Drift HD

Anyone used this cable before? http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/1978

It's a 3.5mm but you can get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter from radio shack. If not how are you recording cockpit audio onto your Drift?

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

My Drift came with a lavalier microphone. I simply plug it in, and insert the mic into one of the ear cups of my headset. Picks up intercom and radio audio perfectly. A little "basic" of course., but it works.

Now that's a super simple solution - nice!

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

Since this topic has come up a few times.

As I went from single camera to multi camera I found that trying to grab the audio on a camera was less and less appealing. I ultimately went with an audio only recorder (e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Tascam-DR-05-Port ... rds=tascam). I can still use the audio with the video as I like, but I gain the benefit of being able to do interviews and use that high quality audio in my videos (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_Csq9RsYiQ).

Plus, I can plug it in, record everything and not have to worry about battery life in my camera(s) nor tons of gigs of video that only need to somehow be edited down to the clips that are worth keeping. For example, that strategy allowed me to capture the communications of the guy in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvNt9usKiBo) during the "you may hear noises" part of the pre-flight. He's the guy you can hear in the background saying "you told me to line-up and wait, but I don't really know what that is".

Anyway, the recorders are cheap and have nicely improved my workflow.

AvidFlyer, you really screwed me up. While checking the cable you mention, I not only bought it, I bought a new GoPro 3 Black also!!! No willpower whatsoever!!!! Go figure!

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

I tried several methods to capture audio with the Drift, and MTV is right on. I ran a mic cable from the camera mount into the cockpit and have a small mic inside my headset earcup. It gets everything that goes through the intercom with good quality, even the XM music.

The mic is a $12 item from Frys Electronics. I think it is a Phillips brand.

Great videos. What cable are you using to patch the intercom/headset into that recorder. I like not having to download a bunch of video just to pull the audio off of it. Your solution looks like it works great.

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

Anybody have a link to these mic's you found that will go under your headset? I already went down this route and searched everywhere for one and couldn't find anything that had a 2.5mm plug or that was small enough to fit under my earcup comfortably.

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

Drift sells an aviation adapter for the Drift. Plug it in the back and plug your headset in. It works well. Looks to essentially be the same as posted above. Also, they sell an external mic.

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

I have the drift adapter and it works well. I have tried the mic in headset trick, and although it works, it doesn't work as well as the adapter (I found the mic's cord to be very short, limiting camera placement and head movement).

Just a patch cable and an 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to plug it into one of the backseat headphone jacks.

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

Backseat headphone jack...that's a good one!! =D> I got an email back from the store in my original post and they said lots of people have ran that patch cord with an adapter with no problems so I'm going to go that route. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Recording Audio with Drift HD

Joey - I use a similar product and it works great with the adapter - I used black electrical tape to hold all connections so they don't wiggle apart while in flight.

There's some noise abberrancies, but not a lot. I'll be trying it out in the new Rans here shortly and can tell you how it handles versus the Taylorcraft of the past.

Oh!!! One other thing - strongly recommend you use the Drift adapter - that will allow you to keep the battery cover on the back (Drift mic jack will plug through the cover).
