Recovering my M4 next winter

Wanted to get some suggestions on shops that might be able to recover a M4. I know I could do it myself, if I didn't have that pesky day job but right now I have more money than time. I am looking for the right shop anywhere in the 11 western states that could do the job over the next winter. I am asking now so I might investigate some shops over this next flying season. Don't hesitate to give a recommendation as any decision would be based on my determination of the person or shop and I would not hold anybody accountable for my failure to do the proper homework in making the selection. (How's that for a disclaimer?) At any rate, let me know who you have used. Who you have heard is good, etc. You can email me directly if you'd rather not post a suggestion here. [email protected] .
Thanks in advance.

Isn't there a Maule rebuild shop in Georgia that associated with the Maule factory? In fact I think one of the Maules runs it.
And the Maulemods guy (Johann?) has a shop somewhere around Boise eh?
Might be a good idea to check around on the Supercub.org site, seems like I recall there are some fabric guys that post there. I seem to recall Steve in the Medford area, and another Steve down in Texas.
Be careful in your selection, I've heard of guys/shops that talk a good show but don't have the skills to back it up, and the customer's airplane suffers for it. Seen it happen with a "fabric expert" located near me.

Didn't Speedbump have his recovered a few years back? Or was that just a paint job?

Fabric and restoration

I have seen some of Jeff's work at Evergreen now a Scappoose, OR and it looks really nice. He did a Stearman that was a true thing of beauty.

They've got a couple good fabric guys there, obviously they didn't do any on mine but I've watched them work and talked to them a bit. Also they just finished an experimental turbo supercub with squared off tail feathers, they did the covering and painting of that so you could take a look at the work. They also are doing/did the wings to a friends Stinson while they were working on mine and finishing the SC.

Are those the guys who are building Bushmasters?

Lots of good fabric shops around. Go visit a few and look at their work. Take a close look at how straight the tapes are, how well they lay down the tape edges, and how well they seal up ALL the edges.

Pay close attention to details, is what I'm saying. Look at a couple they have finished, and one or two they are working on, in progress.

Get with someone who knows fabric work, to help with this task. It's not rocket science, but it can be done really well, or really crappy.

I wouldn't return to the factory, if I were doing that, though.

It is the original Razorback (including belly) except for control surfaces which were redone with polyfiber within the last two years. It has a few patchs and repairs but is not in that bad of shape for being 35 years old. The plane has been hangared the majority of it's life.

Plans are to add the skylight, switch out wood to metal ribs on fuselage and add float fittings and pull handles.

I had not contemplated the metalized belly although that might be a slick option. I don't recall, is there an stc for that?

I am hoping to pickup 30 - 40 lbs on the recover.

BTW, Thanks to all for the PM's with the recommendations. I will be following up with those suggestions as we fly around the Pacific Northwest this season.

Yowza Bowza...

Yowza Bowza,
IMHO this is pretty cool. It like blows the patroller doors off my Maule. Insert a Hotshot "Poof"! New STC for a Plexiglas belly on the M5  Oh wait....I haven't yet done the conversion. Damn, the windows wont open either. Sorry, never mind.

As to the rest of you, I would like some pictures of the swing out windows. I know that the Maule "kit" is basicly a parts pile with a note that says something like Good Luck Bubba! I would really like to be able to get a little more than what the disc will allow.

Mark, are you going to use the BAS handles? Welded float fittings? I think that the metal belly is a Maule Mods STC if I'm not mistaken.

Is the Georgia connection Malue Flight?

Also you could contact Ken, at Performance Aviation, [email protected]. He has done some great work on my MX-7 and I have seen some Maule rebuilds from his shop that are better than they come from the factory.

Might be worth the trip.

I'll take some pix of my windows. I recently replaced all the plexiglass and had 'em all tore apart, guess I should have taken the pix then.

Yes on BAS and on the weld on fittings. I did figure on seeing Yohan (spelling?) for an estimate and discussion on the project, so I'll get some more info on the metalized belly.

Beagle,

If it came down to typing skills or a sense of humor, I'd vote for the sense of humor, which it appears you have. So, no problem...
