aviation.ca wrote:Kirby Chambliss crashes into a ravine whilst practicing for an El Salvador Air Show on Wednesday. The pilot is reported to have been injured after his aircraft crash landed yesterday, badly damaging the plane.
In the air with Kirby at the time was fellow pilot Skip Stewart.
“I was flying off his wing practicing a dual routine when it happened. We were flying a formation high alpha pass. At the end of the runway Kirby's engine quit. There was nowhere to land. He descended into a rocky ravine and crashed onto the side of a steep embankment” said Skip.
“The plane crashed into small trees and flipped over. The airplane was badly damaged, but Kirby extracted himself and walked to a clearing. I had immediately called for the rescue helicopter and they were there very quickly. A testament to the readiness of the El Salvadorian military. Kirby is fine with superficial scrapes and bruises.”
This has also been confirmed by Team Chambliss via twitter who have also reported that the pilot is returning home with his family and will not be participating in the air show which will go ahead this weekend.
Thankfully, the pilot will perform again, we wish Kirby a speedy recovery.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Most likely the photo was snapped of the aircraft already recovered. The article says he went down in a rocky ravine. Good on him for flying it in.

There are other pictures of it upside down hanging in a tree before it came out.

Bad luck part of the world. Fred Cabanas from Key West was just killed in a Salvadorian registered Decathlon doing some promo stuff around Cozumel. From the write ups I gather there's a few airshows around there, but like nosedragger says there's not much open landing country if you have any kind of a problem.

Red Bull may give you wings, just no thrust..........Glad he made it out ok. Always on the edge these guys. Here is a close call that went a lot better for the pilot. I like the breakdown he gave in the interview after the crash. I think this vid has been posted before. If so, here it is for those who haven't seen it.
