Remington 700 bolt action rifle

I have a Remington 700 bolt action rifle. I just seen on the TV that some of the model 700 will fire with out touching the trigger. This is what my rifle dose. At first I thought I did touch the trigger to fire it, but then I worked the built and the rifle fired again with out touching the trigger. I am thankful it did not have a round in the chamber. Has any one out there have the same problem with the Remington 700? Its a rifle I have never used do to the thing going off. The rifle is well maintained as all my firearms. I am just wondering if there is others with the same problem.
Thanks for your input...

I saw a program on tv that reported the same thing ...probably same thing you saw... I always thought the 700 BDL was a fine weapon till I saw that program...

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

I've never had a problem with a 700 trigger, but I know people that have. However, in each case someone had performed a "trigger job" or adjustment prior to the troubles. But, that's anecdotal evidence, there could certainly be problems on unmodified triggers. Just for the record Akflyer2001, do you know if your trigger has ever been modified?

Anyway, the story first aired on CNBC last fall.

One well known rebuttal:

Gun safety is a procedure, not a device. Everyone please be careful out there!

The rifle has never been fired that I know of. It sits in the gun cabinet. This is the first I have had problems with. Thanks for the response.

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

I was considering buying a 700 a while back, but I read this online as a known issue.

Have you considered taking it to a gunsmith to see what they can do if Remington doesn't have a recall program for it?

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

Had a model 70 Wichester that fired when I closed the bolt. Scared the crap out of me. Took it to a gunsmith and found a broken trigger sear. Easy fix. I think that a good gunsmith will be able to fix problem. Good reminder to keep always pointed in a safe direction.

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

I think if you call Remington they would probably fix it or tell you who would near you. I would be surprised if they want to charge you because that could become a financial nightmare for them if there was an accident. If you send it in, plan on being without it for a while.

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

its likely a broken triger sear the 700 dosent have a great trigger anyway put a jewel or a timny triger in it you will see a vast improvment.

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

Take it to a good gunsmith..my uncle has one that I've shot many times..the trigger tension can be set for a soft or hard pull, or you may have a different problem. I have found this to be a good shooting gun.

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

I've never owned a 700 but they seem to have a healthy following and have been a prolific model for decades, used by law enforcement and military. It doesn't seem to be an issue in any shooter forums I've been in, and that is where you would find the reputation for AD if there was one. Sounds like the news nugget was a QC fluke, or a poor custom job. I'm curious to hear how long you've had your 700 and if it's been modified at all.

Also, not every 700 uses the same trigger IIRC.

I've fallen in love with the Savage "accutrigger" on my recent vintage Model 10:

Re: Remington 700 bolt action rifle

Thanks Zane for the reply. The Remington 700 I have , my Father got it back in the late 60s early 70s at the home town sporting goods store. He purchased new. For he never dealt with used fire arms.
He never shot it do to the fact where he lived was in Illinois and that is a shot gun state. He was kind of a collector in firearms. When he past away back in 96 I got most of his firearms. I have never shot the rifle do to the fact I use a Winchester 300 mag. Its my fire arm of choice. I have Browings , Savage, Remington's, Marlins to name a few.
Its not like I will use this rifle for hunting nor will I sell it do to the fact it belong to my father. Just was wondering if others had the same problem is all. Thanks to all who has replyed ...
