Reno Air Races Sept 15-20

Just a post here since they are coming up quickly!

Will be hosting all fliers and BBQ at Dave's hanger throughout the week and a big party as per typical on Saturday night. Make certain to come by. Dave is at Burning man now, hopefully not getting blown away. Winds are howling here in Tahoe today. Anyhow, this is just a reminder and curious who is coming?

See you at the races!

Re: Reno Air Races Sept 15-20

This would have been my 22nd year in attendance .. But just can't make it this year; SHUCKS!

2016 for Sure...

Keep on eye on Thom Richard in 'Hot Stuff', maybe a 3rd or 4th place Gold Formula.

John Parker for the Gold in the Sport Class. His wife just passed away.. He'll be full of gusto to win. Plus the defending champ with the super hot Glassair III is locked up, so it leaves an open field for Parker's Thunder Mustang.

Hoot flies a better course than Stevo. Watch out for him to put on a school Sat/Sun in the Unlimited class!

A few of my photos from the last two years:

Re: Reno Air Races Sept 15-20

I've blown my knee up. Sprain ACL and irregular partial tears in both meniscus is the preliminary. I won't know the full extent of it all until after the MRI on Thursday, followup on the 8th but I'm feeling more than a sprain on the ACL and I suspect some fairly extensive surgery. I'm just hoping it can be done through a scope. We'll see but I for definitely won't be there for the races. All y'all have the most fun you can.

Re: Reno Air Races Sept 15-20

Will be there! Hoot in Strega. How cool is that!!
Our own Chet Harris is again trading out his 31" Bushwheel equipped Maule for a rollerblade wheel wearing Formula One speedster. I sold Miss Demeanor last year, so he will be flying #3, Miss U, which is owned by another Alaskan pilot. Chet was just down in Reno this week doing some familiarization flights with the plane.
As Joseph said, Thom has been doing well on the international Formula One circuit in Brian Reberry's creation "Hot Stuff". His speeds haven't been enough to catch "Endeavor", but word is he was running a stock engine and just installed something better... Bigger news is Justin Phillipson, who many met at the High Sierra Flyin with his Cessna 120, just finished his Shoestring project "No Stings Attached". I believe he is sporting a new Catto WING. The way Justin flies the course, his lap times will be much better than someone else in a faster ship. Usually can't expect much from a first time showing of a racer as it takes time to get everything worked out, but in Justin's case, expectations are high.
Usually a slim turnout for the morning Formula One races at 8AM, but hopefully knowing that at least a few of the Formula One race pilots also fly low and slow and have been know to waterski, land on gravel bars and the like - maybe a few of you will buck the hangover to be there bright and early to cheer them on!

Re: Reno Air Races Sept 15-20

I never miss it. I'll be there from Thursday on.

Its good to see some interest in the smaller airplanes. There's always some good racing in the F1 and Biplane and so few come to see it. Sport Class is always good and there's a lot of them. Unlimited field is a little thin again with only 2 heats per day, but most of the hot ones are there.

My son and I will be there, Fri-Sun if I get my way. Wife might have this crazy notion that school is more important on Friday

The boy's education is important. You should never let school interfere with that. Time for the annual lesson in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and high desert weather. Or a lesson in cultural anthropology. So much to learn in Reno.

Exactly my thinking! I'd rather fly him to the Grand Canyon, for example, than have him learn about it solely from a book :)

Thinking of making the trip weather permitting. My thought was to fly into silver springs. Any thoughts recommendations.

Saw Precious Metal had a fire today during a fueling stop. Pilot got out fine, but the aircraft was a total loss. Too bad, what a cool plane.

Very sad news...

Though the disappointment is very high among Thom and crew .. I certainly don't call this a total loss.

Re: Reno Air Races Sept 15-20

Daves hanger is open to all. We are there all week. Come say hello.

Wondering where to find us? Find the Brietling tent and do a 180 and walk 500'. Door is open with a red and white 182 in the hanger on the left. Can't miss it.

Makes for a great place to relax.

The music ruined what otherwise would have been a cool video. No sweeter sound than a RR Merlin pulling inches!
