Rentals in Atlanta area?

Hey, my names nick. Long time lurker.

I used to live in the seattle area(up visiting right now anyone want to fly? i have gas $$$!). but now im working down out of ATL airport.

Back here in seattle I used to rent a J-3 from a guy on vashon island and i would love to get back into flying low and slow off grass strips.

I know atlanta isnt backcountry territory but.....Anyone know of any fun planes(old and slow) in the atlanta area that wont cost me 170$ to rent?

I havent found anything... at this rate im going to have to buy a 1\2 share of a cub\taylorcraft or something.

thanks!

Atlanta

Have a look at the old Tara Airport ( probably has a new name now) Just South of Jonesboro on Hiway 41 ( of Allman brothers fame).

The other is Henry County airport, or the airport down by Atlanta Intl. Raceway (AIR). Fulton County Airport ( Charlie Brown...no kidding) and Peachtree Dekalb are way to yuppified now.

If you want to go that far, there is a little strip by Jackson, GA ( or used to be) where there were some teaching going on.

I'm sure there is stuff down here, but it's not close. This is closer, I'm not sure what they may have to rent though. http://www.airnav.com/airport/GA2

Check with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Flying Club. I don't know the availability of it, but a few years back before I had my license and I was down there, I recall a couple of members bringing a straight J-3 to a fly-in.

Again, I don't know who the owners are, if it's available for rent, or if it's even still there, but hopefully someone there can point you in a better direction.

Typing this from my office at Charlie Brown (FTY)...

Peachstate (GA2) is a great little airport on the southside of town. A bit of a drive, but worth it if you make a day trip out of it. Nice little grass strip... [airport]GA2[/airport]

{edit} Evidently the Shortfield Explorer is still having some glitches... Here's the <a href="http://www.shortfield.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=50&snum=04106.*A&locid=GA2&loc=PEACH%20STATE&vw=5" target="_blank">direct link</a>.

My brother Nate lives off the end of the runway and I live about six mile to the north. If your ever down that way shoot me an email the day before...we'll get the Cub out and go find some trouble. If you're looking to rent try these folks: http://www.flytailwheel.com I don't think they do, but it would be a start.

As for other airports...

Tara has grown up quite a bit although there is still a very active IAC chapter there. Agree on PDK and Charlie Brown...along with Cobb and Gwinnett. There's more jet traffic in and out of them than anything else.

Mathis Field on the north side has some nice grass roots activity. Jasper, Winder and Gainesville are all still pretty slow and easy going, but all them are pretty far north.

Do not know about rentals at any of them as I do not have the need.

If your down this way on the southside feel free to get in contact: [email protected]

Clay,
I fixed the shortfield explorer in the new version i just released.

Hey, if you have a second you should add an airport description, PIREP, and some photos for Peach State!

Someone down at Peach State does instruction in a Cub and Stearman. I don't know the rates. Here's the airports web address: http://www.peachstateaero.com/

I'm not aware of any taildragger rentals in the Atlanta area. A good place to check for taildragger partnerships is the lobby of the main airport building at PDK (if they have the bulletin board back up) and the front window of Wings & Things at PDK. You might as well post your own ad while you're there.

Tara Field is the airport next to the raceway. It is owned by Clayton County but located in Henry County. I have a Stinson based there. The only flight school there just closed.

Thanks for the tips guys. Checked out pdk\ wings and things but no luck.

I will have to check a few little airports around here when i get more time off.
Unfortunately the YJFC just standardized to an all 172 fleet. yawn.

Peach state looks promising:

preston aviation:
Piper J3 Cub $130.00 per hour
J3 Scenic Rides Rides Start at $62.50 for 30 minutes.
Prices include fuel (wet)

I will have to give him a call and get more info.

Just sitting on reserve all day, would love to go up. Emailing now.

thanks for the info guys! looks like this search is going to be a bit harder then i thought

Life is not a dressed rehearsal

Update

hey everyone.

Last week I went down to GA2 to go up in Tim Preston's cub.

I had a blast! Not a real monster with 65hp but it was real doors-open fun!

After a few laps at peach state we headed up to "rust"(3ru) for a few laps.. then back to peach state for lunch.

I forgot how much fun it is to slip those little planes over the trees..!
I think im going to give him a call this weekend... anyone one want to grab a bite to eat at the little restaurant there? or maybe do some flying? Good food and very reasonable prices.

PM me or email: carb67 at gmail dot com
