Replacing bottoms on 1320s

I am looking at a set of 1320s but the forwards half have fiberglass on them so I am sure there is some damage, I'm thinking corrosion more than anything else because they are not all beat up. Anyone replaced the bottoms and can give me a real world time figure on replacing the bottoms, or the best place to get skins?

These will be going on an experimental so I wouldn't have an issue making my own bottoms if it can be done, or do the forwards have need to be formed/stamped?

Thanks

Re: Replacing bottoms on 1320s

You're probably right regarding corrosion. I stripped the bottoms on a set of EDO 2000s that had somebody's "good idea"...some kind of black hard stuff that was next to impossible to get off. Once I got it off, I found bad corrosion under it, and wound up replacing the bottoms, which I should have done in the first place, Grrr.

EDO 1320 bottoms are fluted, not flat metal. Last time I checked an outfit in New York--Raceway Engineering, owned the type certificates for the little EDO floats. Don't know if they are still in business. Erick at Kenmore should be able to tell you who owns that now.

Eddy Peck in Canada MAY have bottoms. Some of his stuff is not PMA'd, but if you're experimental..... http://peckaero.com/

You're most likely going to be waaaay better off replacing them than trying to salvage old ones.

It's not that bad a job, you'll need riveting tools, drills, and basic aluminum setup.

Thanks for the reply. I passed on the project floats and found a set that are very straight for a good price so I pulled the trigger on the bolt n flys.
