Right light out 185, really.....?

Hey guys,

I just just got some LED lights for my 78' A185F, one a landing light and the other a taxi light with the defused looking glass.

Used one of the few warm days in this cold snap to drop the cowl and replace the old GEs. Everything goes well up until the function test, the left light works with ether the taxi or landing switch flipped, the right does work at all, and I also already tested it before installing, so I know the LED light does work.

Before I head back to the hangar with my multimeter, any thoughts or places to look first?

Also just confirming the right light is the landing light, and any way to double confirm the installation ring orientation?

Thanks!

Do a search for led lights in the forum. There was a long write up about issues with the Cessna designs. It was related to the scat hose on the right front.

Do you have a link or just a couple cliff-notes?

Was it the hose damaging the wire that goes from the left to the right?

After much head scratching, and replacing the wiring in the cowl for the lights I realized the problem is the terminals on the back of the light are in a slightly different position than the OEM bulbs. Turns out the positive terminal of the taxi light was shorting out on the wire in the scat tube that runs from the inlet just behind the oil cooler to the muffler cuff. It didn't happen immediately after installing them, but it didn't take very long for the vibrations to wear through the rubber in the scat tube to expose the wire that keeps the tube formed. Once I realized that, I put an insulator around the positive terminal of the taxi light and never had a popped circuit breaker in the 200 flight hours since.
...

Was this what you were talking about?

That is what he is referring to. Happened to me as well. Easiest solution is to loosen one end of the scat hose and rotate it until a bend is created that pulls the hose away from the light. Alternative is to use lots of RTV on both the scat hose and the offending screws on the back of the light.

Gotcha, I'll head over to the hangar tomorrow and check that out

Thanks!

Also could be the + and - wires are backwards on the other light. Since it is LED it will only work the one way. That seems to get allot of people.

That is exactly what I was referring to. Sorry I didn’t respond sooner, work got in the way. Our scat tubing already had the bend in it, but I can see how it may come into contact with the terminals if not. We also checked the polarity of the before install. A 9V battery works perfectly.

This was my first thought. Polarity gets a lot of people as the old bulbs aren't polarity sensitive.
