Romance of Flying (One Six Right)

Some guy posted this trailer over on sc.org, what an incredible looking video. I really like the tight trailing shots of the DC-3.

Received the DVD on Monday 12/12/05. As the sample shows this DVD has some incredible photography. It is a documentary of Van Nuys airport (VNY) and also goes into the demise of small airports and general aviation. As a sales pitch for GA I don't think you can find a better story. It gets a bit on the dry side when they start the GA sales pitch and if your not a fan of GA history it'll be a yawner during the middle of the 73 minute video. There are lots of other features in the DVD menu so the documentary is only 1/2 of the DVD. I've watched it three times and keep picking up bits and pieces missed the first time through. It's worth the 30.00 or so they want but it is a documentary so don't expect the wife and kids to get a big thrill out of it. (although my 2 year old grandson loved it so who knows) I'd give it a 7 outta' 10. The video clip, shot from above the Pitts while it does a vertical aileron roll into a tailslide is amazing. I guess it was shot from a helicopter but my hats off to them as to how it was coordinated.

I finally watched this last night, what an incredible movie. The cinematography and production quality are top notch.
While Van Nuys airport has no real appeal to me, I did like the message of the movie about how GA is an important but threatened national resource.
I wish they (the people with nice cameras and money) would produce some more movies with this same theme about other historic airports.
That J3 really looked ridiculous taking off on 16R.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
I just watched this movie the other evening for the first time too, enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I didn't figure a documentary about a big, fully paved-over, towered airport would be so enjoyable. I didn't check out the special features, guess I goofed up.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
Admittedly "very biased opinion" alert ~ Brian Terwilliger made a film that is at its heart not the history of VNY but a love story to flying and GA. By the time he gets to that scene of Meigs field X'd out in the middle of the night, even if you're not a pilot or aviation buff ... you knew and felt why that was such a tragedy because of what Brian had shown you up until that point. That's good story telling. I've handed that DVD to friends who didn't think they gave a hoot about flying or aviation ~ and they all handed it back and said they didn't think they would, but genuinely enjoyed it.
A CFI I interviewed the other day said he hands it to all his students first thing and says "watch this; it's what it's all about."
Brian is a supporter of what I'm trying to write. With his kind help, I spent a week at VNY last October interviewing pilots from the film.
16R was made from the heart and a real passion for flying ~ and it shows. I'd recommend "One Six Left" also; it's a companion DVD about the making of the film and includes an insightful interview with Brian as well as other extras including a great "continuous shot from takeoff to landing" Pitts Pattern flown by Edan Shalev that's beautifully filmed.
