Rough couple days for the BCP server

Our web host has been getting attacked all week long by who knows what, but it's taking its toll on all the servers they host.

There's nothing I can do about it, but if the site seems down, you can check our Twitter feed for updates. No signup is required.

The great news is that BCP 3.0 is hosted on a completely different host, so hopefully this will soon be a thing of the past. Sorry for the downtime, folks.

A little off-topic, but sometimes if I try to find a thread & it doesn't come up on "search"- it's very time-consuming to have to check each of the many many forums (there are 31 of them). it's your site , Zane, but IMHO it would be nice if the number of forums was parsed down. Seems like a dozen or so could do the trick.

You've said this before, and I do think about it occasionally. However, I think the classification of information into our approx 25 subforums provides a browseable interface of sorts, and lets the user kind of tune in to different channels or use it as a table of contents.

I've seen some forums that had too few, and it was like overload of disparate topics. I suppose there's a happy medium, so perhaps when I get some free time I'll think about consolidating a few.

Of course, everything is about to change, so we'll see what you think when the new site launches. Your idea may actually be more applicable soon.

Re: Rough couple days for the BCP server

Do you guys have IPS/IDS like Snort? It really helps against Hacks. I used to build custom firewalls and routers using the BSD route.d daemon. It is a full time job but it works great!

Thank you for dealing with the riffraff that jack around on other people severs! #-o

Who are you using for your host? If you dont have a new host for BCP 3.0, I recommend 1and1.com. They've been great for my 5 sites. The control panel is free of advertisements and clean and easy to work with database wise and user interface wise.

If you're having trouble searching on this site, try using google to search within the site (No offense to the sites search function, I'm just a Google fan). Here's how, type in the google search bar what you want to find, then add (no spaces): site:backcountrypilot.org - So if I was looking for information of the aircraft Found Expedition on BCP, i would type in:

Found Expedition site:backcountrypilot.org

Now, the problem with the search query above is you'll find results like: "I was on an expedition and found some new landing sites." The next trick is to put brackets around your search. By doing this, google will look for results in the exact phrasing you typed in. The new search would look like this:

"Found Expedition" site:backcountrypilot.org

Play around with these tricks and see if they help your searches

Re: Rough couple days for the BCP server

If my searching is not immediately successful, I usually get distracted then forget what the hell I was searching for and that's the end of that. Which proves that there's more than one way to solve things.
"That's not a problem, it's a feature" apparently applies to CRS (can't rember shit) syndrone too.

Re: Rough couple days for the BCP server

FarmerFranck, that's the exact method I use. The Google search is just extremely good at relevance. However, some of our forums here aren't visible to the public (by design), so Google won't return results from those.
