s7 gross weight?

I'm curious about the gross weight on an experimental Rans S-7S. I noticed that on their website it is listed as the same as the certified light sport version, 1320 lbs. Is this correct for the experimental? I was under the impression that it could carry more than that.

Re: s7 gross weight?

All S-7S aircraft have the same gross. 1320. Some of the older non-s models have less.

Re: s7 gross weight?

Any idea if the 1320 lb limit is to keep it LSA, or is it based on strength of the airframe / engine power?

Re: s7 gross weight?

As a builder I suppose you can set almost any limit if you are willing to do the flight tests. I assume the Gross weight is a function of the LSA limit. It also will help with resale.
I would give the guys at Rans a call. They are more than willing to share info.

The factory says 1320, so it's 1320. Does that mean it can't, won't, or hasn't carried aloft more? Of course not. They are a pretty conservative bunch there in Kansas, which I prefer in my airplane designer. VERY conservative on the performance claims in all regards (I think they list the stall at 45 while I fly around sub 30 all the time) and I'd imagine the gross weight calcs are similarly conservative. Good, I like that cushion and don't plan on testing it.

I see you're in Montana, stop by the Three Forks Fly-in this summer and let's go flying, there are some great gravel bars nearby.

Alright, thanks for the info guys.

courierguy,

If I am able to stay in Montana (I'm in Bozeman) this summer I will be at the Three Forks fly-in and will definitely take you up on that offer! I've recently been dreaming about having an S-7 or Cub to do just that kind of flying.
