Sad day. 6 y.o.dies in float plane crash.

Looks like no pre-landing checklist. Wheels were down. Lake Goodwin is about 8 miles west of the arlington airport.Bum deal.

Re: Sad day. 6 y.o.dies in float plane crash.

Sad indeed. Its impossible to know whether this kid had a chance and the story does not indicate whether the pilot was capable of attempting the rescue after the accident. I sincerely hope that every possible effort was made to rescue that boy.

PLease....If you fly with children especially, make sure you have plan in the back of your mind for dealing with emergencies like this.

I have seen folks on the ramp at my airport refueling the plane with their kids strapped in. I will never do that cause I'm afraid they would never get out in a fire.

condolences to the family.

Another tragedy, another young life lost, and the prevention is so easy. What a terrible thing!

Anyone know where the kid was sitting? If it was just me and my kid,he for certain would have been riding shotgun.Maybe a better chance of helping the little guy get out than if they are strapped in a backseat?Very sad.Not sure if I could live with myself for doing something like that. What a bummer.

Re: Sad day. 6 y.o.dies in float plane crash.

A tv news report I read online indicated someone in a boat zoomed out to the airplane & helped the pilot get out, but was unable (too cold, seized up) to go back down to help the kid. I wonder if maybe he didn't realize until later that there was more than one person aboard. I imagine a gear-down upset like this is very violent and could easily knock the pilot insensible. Fire dept rescue diver apparently got the kid out about 20 minutes later but he ended up passing away that evening. Very sad.
I was in the area & overflew lake Goodwin a cople hours later, was worried that it might be someone I know but luckily no. My heart sure goes out to the pilot & the rest of the youngster's family.

Here's another link, a little bit better info.Sounds like the dad wasn't able to get out by himself, or maybe unconcious. Bum deal they couldn't get the little guy didn't get out in time.

This is not the same incident but,,,, I bet it looked exactly the same. From the inside it probably looks violent too.. And it is over in a second....... poor little kid....

Bottom two pics are "the" plane. I would assume there should be a warning system to prevent this type of accident?"Never been in an amphib floatplane."
Sucks.Close to home. I dug an RV-6 that stall/spin out of a field 2 years ago with my backhoe less than 10 miles from here.Bad memories

Re: Sad day. 6 y.o.dies in float plane crash.

My heart goes out for the family and friends of this little boy. I don't know much about float flying but this gear down landing thing apparently happens too much, my question is why? Why are these guys making a landing approach with wheels down? Are they putting them down or coming down by themselves or are they taking off from a runway and forgetting to retract them?

Amphibs....................lot of variables....seems like it would be easy to remember, for some reason it is not.I try the.... NO MATTER WHAT, every landing, alone or with a load of people, say OUT LOUD.. on base...Wheels are UP I am landing in the water,or Wheels are DOWN, I am Landing At the airport....out loud!....So far that has worked.Hope it continues.Nobody is immune.....straight floats are sweet......

Re: Sad day. 6 y.o.dies in float plane crash.

All it takes is a set of mirrors out on the struts so you can SEE the gear position, and some discipline.

The manufacturers have all opted to sell really cool "gear advisory systems", which are easy to suppress, and easy to ignore, but they give you a warm fuzzy feeling, right up till you're wet.

Mirrors and discipline. There are no mysteries here. Many of these tragedies, and often by some really experienced and skillful pilots.

This is one of the reasons, actually THE reason that amphib insurance is so expensive.

Was that the one with the female pilot who lived on the private strip (Price) near Camano Airport? I heard about that one, understood it was engine trouble -- couldn't understand why the crash with all the open fields around the Stanwood area available for a forced landing.

Re: Sad day. 6 y.o.dies in float plane crash.

Yep. She was flying from arlington to camano to their private(pretty short) strip. She was a very accomplished pilot. Engine quit over stanwood, nothing but farm fields below her.She was in contact with her husband on a hand held out at their strip.Don't know if she was distracted by the radio or what happened. There was one little overhead telephone wire she may have seen at the last moment and yanked back.It stalled and spun from what we figured probably 150 feet. She had her niece with her.No survivors. Bum deal, probably could have fixed the plane and flown it out of the field.
