San Antonio area?

I am in kSAT San Antonio area for a few days for work. I have Friday and Saturday to blow and willing to drive the distance via car unfortunately. Anything cool that anyone would recommend to do our see. Forget the river walk and Alamo stuff. Been there done that.
Looking for airplane stuff, museums, airplanes, bad arse hangars with friendly faces, or even scenic drives and places to see non aviation?
Any help appreciated!

hey Swampcub

Fredricksburg is northwest of San Antonio about an hour or so, they have the Hangar Hotel there and some good food close by.

Luchenbach Texas is close to Fredricksburg also, have you heard the song by Waylon Jennings, "Lets go to Luchenbach Texas"

Or go the other direction to Louise (T26) for the 26th Under-the-Wire fly-in. Warbirds and more then a hundred other planes of all types. Yummy food, fun times.

Re: San Antonio area?

For great BBQ, Rudy's Country Store and BBQ in Leon Springs! Awesome Baby Backs and the Moist Brisket is like eating candy!

A nice cruise out around Mico would be nice too. If Heath Voss still offers helicopter rides in Mico, that might be fun. Can't miss their place. Huge shop on the east side of the road north of Mico along 1283.

(Edit)..... Company is Hangar13.com in Medina Lake. Really good folks and I wouldn't doubt they'd mind if you stop in to visit if they're around.

Have fun!

Re: San Antonio area?

Good stuff thanks. Had I great ride around the sAT area today. I wish I would have gotten some of this earlier. Before I got 58slylane's info, we were making our way from south side of SAT around the west side. Went by the Stinson and musuem. Then started working way toward medina lake. I saw that airport on the sectional but we never made it. Heads lots of stops and neat things to see along the route. We actually turned around at San Geronimo at the locked gate. We were dissapointed so we headed to find something to eat. We saw that Rudy's place but couldn't jump of highway in time and didn't know what it was (until now your recommendation). Thinking about making the long ride to t26 for barnstormer's recommendation tomorrow.

Thanks BCPers!

The ride to Under the Wire will be well worth it, I stopped by for a while today and will be heading back tomorrow. Quite a few planes have already shown up, mostly Stearman's!
