Thanks for the heads up. We'll be sure to avoid that area! Don't want to get anyone upset. There's already enough people who don't appreciate airplanes flying around at low altitudes.

Re: San Diego Area Grass/Dirt Strips

yeah there used to be a lot of people doing air work over that area and he evidently took offense... a few have been turned in by him... I have other areas I use so I never flew low over his area... but I do know a couple who routinely flew low over the road which goes the entire length of the plateau from north to south...just stay high when you fly in that area... you can't miss seeing it....

FAR 91.119(c) sez fly as low as you want over open water or sparsely populated areas,
but not closer than 500' to any person vessel vehicle or structure.

Thanks for the PIREP SDPilot. I'm headed there next week. Really looking forward to trying out some new strips. I'll give a full report when I get back. 8)

Cool pic of the altimeter. I also get a kick out of flying below sea level! :P

Any issues with Kane West MOA? Looks like the base is at 10,000 feet, so I wouldn't think it would be a problem, but it never hurts to ask. Especially since I'm unfamiliar with the area. Local knowledge is always appreciated! 8)

I also flew through this weekend, I agree L90 and KSAS were both in great shape, definitely want to explore that area a little more.

Re: San Diego Area Grass/Dirt Strips

ok so this thread is back... there is a dry lakebed east of ocotillo called half hill.. fun to land but if you see a vehicle in the distance coming code 3 leave fast... don't ask me how i know.... also there is smugglers cove... it is a long ago abandoned forestry strip down stream from the Morena lake damn in the canyon... also be wary there for border patrol... again don't ask me how i know.....any place you land down here , even at Jacumba which is a county airport you will attract the attention of law enforcement... i know pilots who were stopped at Jacumba and questioned by border patrol just for landing there... it is right along the border fence but is a county maintained airport..so any landing at any other place like i described is at your own risk and could result in being detained for several hours....

Sold the 180 to go to school. Rebuilding a P206 for myself now. Also working on building a hangar to run my AME business out of. Been busy and haven't been flying much.

Sorry for the thread drift.

Re: San Diego Area Grass/Dirt Strips

I checked out Giant Rock yesterday. The main landing strip is definitely unusable. I landed on the flat dry lakebed below and taxied up the hill. Even taxing up the hill was sketchy. Took a few passes to find the best spot to land and figure out the winds. Tundra tires definitely recommended.
