San Diego to Moscow (ID)

I am moving from the sunny beaches, warm tortillas, and bland weather of San Diego to Moscow, ID this summer. I'm originally from Utah so I'm happy to be moving somewhere with cold weather and mountains.

Right now I'm looking at departing Ramona (KRNM) to Daggit (KDAG), going around China Lakes restricted areas to Tonopah (KTPH). Depending on what time I get off deck that might be my camping spot for the night. Then I'd fly on to Battle Mountain (KBAM) and talk to Fallon for their MOAs. Then I'd continue to Ontario (KONO) and finally arrival at Moscow/Pullman (KPUW).

I'd probably be doing this solo at the end of the month, probably Memorial Day weekend. I was also preferring to camp at either Tonopah or Battle Mountain but haven't been to either before.

I know you can camp at Austin. It's about in the middle of Tonopah and Battle Mt.

There is an awesome private dirt strip in fair to rough condition north of Austin that would be a great camping spot.

Also a great little dry lake 17nm southwest of Austin about 220 degrees. Be a great place to camp for the night. Nice and dark for star gazing.

I used to fly from LA (Hawthorne) to Moose Creek a lot. I left LA and flew up the central valley to Columbia and camped out there for the night. Next morning, up early, and fly up the road heading east and over the Sierras, over to Winnemucca, then north into Idaho. Easy two days with relatively short flying days. I went to school in Moscow. Great college town, have fun.

Nice area. Nice town. Great BC skiing, fishing, & river sports. Sun deprived in winter.

Re: San Diego to Moscow (ID)

My route every summer to Johnson creek is Gillespie to Tonopah,,,direct to Battle mountain, direct to JC... It works and only once did I leave so late that I spent the night in Battle Mt... Got a ride from a forestry guy, based at BM into town. stayed at a Casino Hotel and got a ride from the hotel early next AM to the airport...don't know what you are flyin but My Maule does the first leg in 2and a half hrs... 1 Hr 30 for the next leg to BM and 2 and a half to 3 on the JC leg...spent one night in Tonopah on the way home once.. also in a casino..T storms in the desert are a bitch...you can pitch a tent on the lawn at Tonopah or they might let you sleep on the couch over nite....Leave early if you can... by the way last summer I gassed at BM and on runup to leave had a rough run up... Turned out to be fouled plugs... the mechanic at the FBO, can't remember his name worked on it for 3 hrs pulled and cleaned all the plugs and wanted $50 bucks for the work... I gave him 100... Nice folks there... :D

Re: San Diego to Moscow (ID)

While dodging weather and running out of daylight I found myself in Battle Mountain last May when I moved from Wyoming to California. There was no one at the airport when I landed, I just pitched my tent and slept under the wing. Probably not the greatest place to stay but it worked.

Yes, that is my strip. Call first to make sure we are home and for runway condition. Plan to stop here if you would like. Backcountry pilots are welcome.
