Sandy River Airport - Sandy, OR

While visiting some friends in the Portland area this last week, Erin and I stopped in at Sandy River Airport (03S) in Sandy, Oregon, just east of Portland on the highway to Mt. Hood. Longtime friend and ultralight pilot Arty Trost operates her single place Maxair Drifter out of there, and so she showed us around.

The strip is 2200' feet long, all grass, and has a lot of resident ultra activity. In fact, Sport Flight Aviation has a manufacturing facility on the field, and builds its line of Talon aircraft. This model has some amphibious Full Lotus floats.

Beautiful setting, I look forward to visiting this place in the future. The rumor is that if you rent an aircraft in the Portland area, you have to sign an agreement NOT to fly into Sandy River (or Flying M) due to the trees, etc. Seems ridiculous to me since that runway was like a golf course, but I can see where 2200' might be a little short for a 172 full of goofballs.
