Santa Monica to Close

Although it is the antithesis of backcountry, it is sad that the Santa Monica airport will be closing.

I just worry about it setting precedent - lots of muni airports out there that I'm sure politicians and developers would love to get their hands on.

Re: Santa Monica to Close

You had to know that something like this was inevitable. This battle was going on hot and heavy in 1977 when I did my instrument rating there, with the city trying hard to close the airport.

Greed is a powerful adversary, and the potential value of the he land under that airport is all the city fathers can see.....$$$ signs.

The only thing keeping this airport open as long as it has been has been grant assurences, based on monies the FAA put into airport renovations. All the city has to do is continue to squeeze and refuse any new AIP projects and let those assurences lapse, then close the place.

Sad, and a clear message to us all: Get involved with your local airport, and do everything you can to support it and ensure that airport management has the best interests of GA in mind at all times.

Politics pure and simple. Opposing views on fossil fuel use. California is at the epicenter of the clash of our civilization. But we don't do politics here. So put you head back in the sand and pretend it will go away.

It seems that the tactic of blocking freeways and now airports is the preferred tactic if you want to make a difference.

Putting my head back in the sand now.

I don't think it's about fossil fuels, Rob. I think it's about the lack of foresight local governments have and their desire to grab land and use it for things more immediately profitable than the long term value of airports located close to the people that they serve. Same thing happens in other parts of the country the same way without California politics.

Hey Pete, I hope your well! I think your point is valid.

I think this can be thrown into the mix also. Noise, leaded fuel, worry about a crash.

Later buddy =P~

It is a question of value. What use benefits the most people. At least they are closing it legally. In Chicago they closed an airport about that size by going out in the middle of the night and digging ditches across the runway.

I landed there many years ago. Special noise procedures.
