Santiam Junction 8S3 Oregon

Stopped by Santiam Junction last night and walked the strip. Nice and smooth and suitable for aircraft up to DC3s. The strip itself is dusty and a bit bleak although not as bad as the satellite images might have you believe. Lots of hiking opportunities here. Lots of traffic noise, so camping on the field would not be great. Afternoon winds here are from the west if this airstrip follows the Mckenzie Bridge pattern. I landed from the east. It's helpful to have an airplane that will fall like a brick (Pacer) for this approach. Generally landing from the west would be best.

Re: Santiam Junction 8S3 Oregon

I often think of landing here. I love McKenzie Bridge but as mentioned, evening winds are often not favorable, even in the Zentih. But the thought of kicking cinder rocks up at the plane everywhere has always led me to pass on this strip.
