Scout heater

Hello all.
I've been called back to my roots. I fly a kerosene burner for my day job but am happily back to low and slow and having a great time!
Recently picked up a very nice 97 Scout that has been in Portland for the last few years. Still trying to remember your feet are for more than climbing the steps of the cabin door! Getting there slowly.
We are based in NW Wyoming in the summer and Phoenix in the winter with some central CA thrown in for good measure.
Planning to use it primarily for camping/fishing/exploring with the kids. Idaho is handy to our summer base so hopefully some trips there next year. I've already moved it south for the winter. I hear AZ has a pretty active backcountry group too.
Question: The forward heater outlet is radiating a lot of heat. It would probably feel good most everywhere but Phoenix. Maybe there too in the winter but I'm not sure. Most definitely not in the summer or even last week as I was descending into the valley. I took the valve apart and it's fine. It closes fully (no light penetrates when closed). I think it is a function of the massive amount of air from the large scat tube from the muffler shroud. I may just cap it at the shroud or reduce the size of the scat tube. Anyone else have this issue?
My first attempt at uploading pictures so it may be a mess.....

The ACA heaters are fantastic and hard to get to turn off due to the awesome airflow they have. If you dont need it I’d just remove the scat hose. Another option would be to just covet the inlet with aluminum tape. Or cover part of it if you like the option of some heat. I prefer to block the inlet rather then just capping the outlet.

70deg F and above I have to fly with the port side window open ( 7gcbc ) .Even back seaters appreciate the “ breeze” .
Pretty Scout . How do you like the pod ?

A1Skinner,
Blocking part of the inlet side might be a good option. Just so I'm clear about your suggestion, you are referring to the inlet (firewall side) of the firewall mounted heater on/off valve correct? I suppose the outlet side of the muffler shroud is part of the inlet too.
The easiest would be to simply remove the scat tube but would that cause any cooling issues if the muffler scat connection wasn't capped off? I guess all that hot air is just getting directed overboard at the heater on/off valve as it currently is though. I'll have to look at it. I believe it would be close to the carb. Not sure that would be good.
I'm sure some of my terminology is cringe worthy to those of you who actually know what they are doing. Sorry....
umwminer,
Thanks! The pod is nice. Very useful since this one doesn't have the extended baggage. A bit heavy though but who am I to talk.

No, I mean the inlet into the heater shroud itself. IIRC, it’s pretty accessible to just put foil tape that. I don’t like dumping more hot air into the cowl then necessary. Stop air from going in to the shroud, and less hot air comes out. This way you could experiment or regulate the airflow with foil tape and still have some heat on cool mornings, but lessen the airflow enough that it doesn’t push through the valve anymore…

Hello AP,
Thanks.
Yes, an Airglass. Seems to be pretty well made. Handy since mine is older and doesn't have the extended baggage. That said, I took it off yesterday. I don't think I have any extended camping adventures and just think it looks better without it. It's a piece of cake to install again so if I need it, I will pop it back on.
Maybe the heat issue has to do with my particular heater control. Although, it sounds like some others have something similar. It wasn't really a problem until I got to AZ. 100+ really made it a project.
So you aren't in AZ any longer?

Sorry Ap and Miner, I just saw your messages about the pod.
I think I will hang onto it for a bit. I'm still licking my wounds from the purchase and it may be a bit before I can free up funds for the extended baggage mod. The pod is pretty useful without the baggage mod. I just didn't think I'd need it over the winter and wanted see how it looked without it.
Ap, for sure look me up when you get down this way. (831) 224-1028
