Screwed Tire

Image

We had just departed Gulkana when my wife asks if it is normal for a 'nail' to be sticking out from our tire.

Re: Screwed Tire

That should have made the rest of the trip more enjoyable!!!! I walk our runway and it is funny all the stuff I find---dzus, antennas, and screws. Also, bones from the rabbits that have been devoured.

Re: Screwed Tire

Sheetrock screws are the worst, and nowadays, people use em everywhere and for everything.

Apparently they are being used in lieu of gravel at some airports :)

Re: Screwed Tire

For clarification Mike, that is not a Sheetrock screw. Sheetrock screws have a flat head and that particular screw has a round head.
Geez. Get your facts straight.

I don't think Mike was implying THAT was a sheetrock screw, I think he was just stating that sheetrock screws are the worst. At least that is how I read it.

Re: Screwed Tire

Had a slow unidentifiable leak in my bush tail wheel. Ak Airframes sent tire stop leak.... every tire on every rig...ATV's, cars, trucks...even the JD 510D...hand truck...humdinger....all contain the stop-em leak gookumpucky. No flats in 15 years....all gravel...no pavement anywhere.

Re: Screwed Tire

Often, you can plug a nail hole in a tire with a sheet metal screw and, if you have it, some RTV. Works like a charm!

Re: Screwed Tire

I always thought that getting a flat on take-off and not knowing it would be a real good way to ground loop on landing. If you didn't see the offending object, it'd be impossible to know you'd lost all your air.

I've experienced the unknown flat on landing. It was in an M5 on 31s. Right main. Took a nanosecond to get my attention and recognize the problem. But some major corrective rudder/brake inputs made it largely uneventful. It just steadily pulled right and drifted to the edge of the strip by the time I got it stopped.

Sigh.....a simple generic comment brings out the jousters.....and perfectionists.

The one in MY tire was a Sheetrock screw.....and they ARE the worst. But, screwed is screwed.... 8)

Sounds like a normal M-5 landing to me.
