Seattle area

Hi, again. I couldn't get on the site with my old user name, so I had to join again. Sorry for the confusion.

We'll be shooting video for Wings To Adventure Television in the Seattle/Tacoma area next week. Plan to visit Kenmore Air, Glasair/Glastar, and hop over to Yakima to see Cub Crafters.

I'm playing with the idea of making a tour around the Olympic Penninsula on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Is anyone here located in the area? Suggestions are welcome. And, if you would like to join us, that could be fun.

I leave tomorrow (Wednesday), and will stop in Montrose, CO; Lakeview, OR (at Thunder Ranch) before basing out of Gig Harbor (Tacoma Narrows airport) for the week.

A few of my favorites in that area were Harvey Field at Snohomish (the Fairchild 71 that I used to take care of is there as well as lots of other neat antiques), Roche Harbor out in the islands, and Barker airport..right along the freeway just south of Mount Vernon, WA.

I saw the posts about the fly-in at Johnson Creek. Kinda far from Gig Harbor -- but possible.

Might look funny landing in the Bonanza in the middle of all those Cubs!

Seattle area strips

Resident on Harvey S43 both grass and pavement, are an L5, the Fairchild mentioned may no longer be there but I am not sure, a AN2, a Beach staggerwing, several Cubs, several Stinsons and Taylorcrafts. Call Candi Harvey and I am sure she can call in all the planes you might want to see just to get Harvey Airfield some publicity. She has been under political pressure lately and was/is at risk of losing use of some of the airport property.

On the coast is Copalis State Airport which is the only official runway on a beach in the USA, be sure to check the Point Brown tide tables.

Skykomish State, Stehekin State, or many of the other little spots in the area would be great for a flight into and the background of the Cascades or Olympics are beautiful.

The North West Antique Airplane Club fly-in is the weekend of Aug 18-20 in McMinnville Oregon. Not too far away from KTIW, esp via Bonanza, and there's always LOTS of old (and not quite so old) airplanes. Also the Spruce Goose museum across the street.

There are a number of neat fields on the Olympic Peninsula. Jefferson County has the museum that teach kids to restore and maintain planes in exchange for air time, not to mention a great little cafe. There are five or six fields in Sequim. Sekieu (sp?) is one of the most popular fishing holes around. Quilliute is 5000' of abandoned NAS that is a lot of fun. Copalis as TomD mentioned, lots of low wing go there (watch for The Rock) West Port, Hoquium, East Willipaw (?) and Astoria then to Scapoose (usually very cheap fuel) and Mcminville.
While not forgetting the Eastern side of the State, at 170KTAS, you could cover a pretty big area and some very diverse territory. Not only that but you're hitting "the icing capital" of the US at about the best time of year for photos and VFR.

Hey, I work at Kenmore Air as a line crew. I heard you were coming and thought that that was pretty neat. Please say hello when you are there. Me and my dad also have a Pacer at Harvey and we love flying the back country. You may not be interested in the Pacer but my dad is also restoring a Tiger Moth. Sorry but i cant give you to much info due to lack of knowledge about this but if you would like PM me your email and i could have my dad tell you a bunch about it. Hope this helps.
Thanks

A segment on the Port Townsend Aero Museum would be a good addition to your show. This outfit is helping to perpetuate our type of aviation by teaching some pretty darn good kids how to do restoration/repair work on steel tube, fabric, and wood airplanes-- something that A&P programs are teaching less of nowadays,in favor of all-aluminum or composite-- as well as running quite a few of them thru a pilot-training program using the museum's fleet of old tailwheel airplanes. The guy in charge of this operation is Jerry Thuotte, 360-531-0252. I'm sure he'd be glad to schedule a tour & would appreciate the exposure.
The Spruce Goose Cafe is a popular Puget Sound area eatery, well known by lots of pilots from all over.

Yeah that was us at the NWSC Flyin that did the Flour Bombing. In that cause my dad was on the ground and i was flying but sometimes i can get a little carried away and fly it like a super cub but sometimes thats ok. WE also just put on VGs and that was the best use of 800 bucks. Now we can get real slow and its also much safer.
Thanks for the nice comments.

Adam, I was at the SC fly-in too, & was impressed by your spot landings.
Unfortunately your Pacer couldn't match the Cubs on TO & landing distances, but I thought you did pretty well on that too considering everything.

Yeah it obviously no match but its still fun seeing how fast you can get your own plane off. I think my take off was 351ft which is very good for a pacer and thats with out the VGs. Also though there was only about 4 gallons of gas in the tanks so that probably helped. Any ways thanks for the nice comments and hope to meet all the nice people on this site. If you ever need someone to go flying with, don't be afraid to contact me.
Thanks again

That's very good for any airplane! Adam, hopefully you can make our next BCP fly-in, wherever and whenever that may be.

Looks like we have a pretty good schedule. I arrived at Gig Harbor (Tacoma Narrows airport) on Sunday. Spending today getting things set up.

Tuesday we spend the day at Kenmore Air.

Wednesday at Cub Crafters in Yakima.

Thursday at Glasair/Glastar in Arlington.

Friday is a bit loose, but at Gig Harbor. Looking for a couple of planes to do profiles on? Anyone in the area who is interested, speak up.

Saturday to Harvey Field, in Snohomish.

How, if the weather will hold!

Jr.Cubbuilder we are flying over from fall city with George (Gunny) and we would love for you to fly with us. Our plan is to fly over there in a kinda relaxed fashion and get in to Mcall in the late afternoon.
I understand that you are in Yakima so it would be good to hook up with you as we come through. I will talk to gunny and if you need his phone number i have it but it is also on the Supercub.org post about the western wa cubs going to JC.
thanks and i really hope you can join us.

Tom,
When you get to Harvey, look up Jack and Alice Ady.. they own the 1929 Fairchild 71 there...it's one of 2 left flying. Jack's got lots of pics and history of Harvey Field, and knows everyone around. They live right on the South end of the airport. Tell them John from MT says HI!!
