See and avoid

The FAA just announced a single source webite that lists special use, low level operations routes, etc.

http://www.seeandavoid.org/ ( also can be accessed from http://www.faasafety.gov/ )

It is dog slow right now, but that might be from heavy use due to the FAA announcement.

I have encountered a fast moving military aircraft at my altitude in the mountains and am here to tell you it will accelerate your heart rate.

This looks like a good tool for figuring out where to avoid and where to look for fast movers.

Re: See and avoid

I learned to loiter above the canyons, look all around and then dive down in for my runs. Had guys with more power than me running up them at speed. Saw smoke and a couple of black marks over the years.

Re: See and avoid

Was north bound between Warner Springs & Anza @ 12k in the glider doing about 80 knots, an F-16 blasted by on my starboard side about 500' out and maybe 100' lower. he had to have been doing 550kts at least, he disappeared in seconds, I'll never know if he ever saw me. That wasn't the first time and it won't be the last just hope the last isn't messy. They are very loud in a glider at that distance.

For everyone flying in Western and Eastern Washington be aware the International Military Flying Competition is underway from 18-30 July. With increased low level route activity.

Re: See and avoid

Recently I was down on the trees in the hills of north-eastern Ohio doing my pipeline thing. At that same time, I was also calling in a report on the telephone.

That’s when I looked up and saw two C-130’s in formation trailing a mixture of black smoke and sucked up tree leaves coming at me from my 10:00 and at basically the same tree top level. I assumed they “had me” and I knew that I didn’t have time to turn away or climb. I pushed really down in the trees and turned into the formation splitting them some, knowing the lead plane was going to be on top of me in 2 seconds. Number one never wiggled as he went over, but number two banked a little to his right to miss me more.

Three miles nose to tail isn’t enough for Michelle Obama, but head to head at 50 feet is good enough for the rest of us.

I make a note to myself to call my friend’s son (who crews on ONG C-130’s) when I get home to see if he had been flying. Two hours later when I walk in the house I got a phone call from him! Hum?
