Server upgrade

I've upgraded us to a dedicated server which will hopefully reduce the "Internal Server Error" errors the we get sometimes from overloading our current server. It costs 4 times more, but those new ads are paying for it!

This will hopefully allow us better performance for the new software that will power BCP2.0. It cannot prevent network issues though. It's like replacing an O-300 with an O-540, but if you run some bad gas through it, the effect is the same. #-o

S-L-O-W-!!

Is it just me and the horse I rode in on? For the past week or so, BCP is very slow, no other website or forum I visit, just BCP. Is it me or the server? Anyone else bogged down too? Or, anyone still getting blazing fast server response??

thanks

Re: Server upgrade

This site has been 10 time slower than any other that I have visited for the past several weeks. Usually I and only three or four others are on the site at the same time, so I don't really understand. If it was just that it is overly popular, that would be good, but that does not seem to be the case. Perhaps this will improve with the new server, however, today it is the same.

Re: Server upgrade

Several months ago, BCP started running very slow on any device that was connected to my home internet service, although all other web sites I frequent were running fine. I noticed that my phone, for example, would run BCP great when I was connected to the internet at my office, but not at home.

I called my internet provider, and they did some research over the phone with me. They tried to open BCP on their computers and they told me that they are working on it, but that their internet service does not work well with some websites, and BCP happens to be one of them. They remoted into my computer and set up a link for me to BCP that is hosted by some other company. When I use this link to open BCP, it opens and works very quickly now from home, although my internet security throws a fit everytime I use the link.

Give your I-net provider a call and give them the BCP website and see if it works for them.

Re: Server upgrade

Somewhere in the cobwebs of my memory I seem to remember Zane stating this site runs optimally on Firefox.

Is this (still?) the case, Zane?

Re: Server upgrade

It is lightning fast for me. As far as I know, the web server actually resides in a data center in Los Angeles.

I apologize for the performance issues, although it does seems that it is limited to only a few users and ISP's. It is a very difficult thing to diagnose if I don't suffer the problem. If anyone feels that they are experiencing slow page loads on this server, PM me, but only if you can include the following diagnostic info:

1. The name of your ISP and your location
2. Traceroute results. This will list every "hop" that network traffic makes to get from your computer to the server.
3. Web browser and version.

Thanks for the feedback. In the meantime I will research whether any other Dreamhost users have heard similar reports. It's not fair of some of you guys are left out in the cold, especially if all other websites load fast for you.

This site is too basic to have any severe issues with any browser, but you should avoid Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7 if possible. It's a simple upgrade to version 9 if you insist on using it. I personally use Google Chrome now and love it, but recommend Firefox a close 2nd.

Re: Server upgrade

In the Carson Valley, NV, it's still exasperatingly slow, both on my DSL landline (Frontier is the ISP) and also using my Droid-X with Verizon. Takes fully 20 seconds to go from the log in page to the index. Same to get to "new posts". Wish I was computer smart enough to figure it out. BCP is the *only* site I have trouble with. It also boots me out about every other day, requiring me to log on manually. Bummer.

Bumper, I'm sorry you're experiencing slowness. I can only help if you provide the information requested in the above post.

Also try http://www.oregonlightsport.com/store/

It is on the same server but uses different software. It might help distinguish between a software/database issue and a network issue.

FWIW, my experience is the same as Bumper. The Oregonlightsport site loads quickly.

Re: Server upgrade

Don't know what fix is needed but as with many, my Comcast cable connection w/ BCP is, to use a technical term, pretty damned fast.
